Bristol Palin: "Teenagers need to prevent pregnancy to begin with – this isn’t ideal. "

Governor Sarah Palin Welcomes Her First Grandchild

December 31, 2008, Anchorage, Alaska – Governor Sarah Palin has welcomed her first grandchild, Tripp Easton Mitchell Johnston, born to Bristol Palin and Levi Johnston on December 27.

“We are over the moon with the arrival of this healthy, beautiful baby,” Governor Palin said. “The road ahead for this young couple will not be easy, but nothing worthwhile is ever easy. Bristol and Levi are committed to accomplish what millions of other young parents have accomplished, to provide a loving and secure environment for their child. They are both hard workers, they’re very strong, and have faith they’ve made the right decision in setting aside their own interests to make this child their highest priority.”

Palin added, “When Bristol and Levi first told us the shocking news that she was pregnant, to be honest, we all at first looked at the situation with some fear and a bit of despair. Isn’t it just like God to turn those circumstances into such an amazing, joyful blessing when you ask Him to help you through?”

Bristol Palin said she “obviously discourages” teen pregnancy and knows that plans she previously made for herself will now forever be changed. “Teenagers need to prevent pregnancy to begin with – this isn’t ideal. But I’m fortunate to have a supportive family which is dealing with this together. Tripp is so perfectly precious; we love him with all our hearts. I can’t imagine life without him now.”

Bristol begins her final semester of high school next week where she’ll get her last credit needed to graduate. She looks forward to continuing her record of good grades and high achievement. Levi is continuing his online high school work in addition to working as an electrical apprentice on the North Slope.

5. yea, too bad 'God' didn't
step in and prevent the pregnancy to begin with. Seems that would have been the simpler 'miracle'.

15. God was taking a coffee break
god usually monitors procreative activity throughout the universe to determine when babies shall and shall not be formed. God was either taking a coffee break or was too focused on some activity in Sweden at the time that he forgot Wasilla.

2. Well, I've heard that line hundreds of times.

Including disappointed relatives whose offspring went out, did it, got pregnant, delivered...

But all the gibber of 'safe sex', 'abstinence', et al, does sod all when underlying trifles such as self-respect, respect for others, respect for potential offspring, et cetera, are continually ignored?!

It is not about the pretty catchphrases, though that's all that's sold. An empty package; the content smuggled away.

And then people wonder why society has problems. When IS the last time anybody in the media said the message of "respect" when it came to sexuality or its repercussions? Never? *ding* *ding* *ding* Only "don't do it" or "use a condom" and that's it. Or, even "get a disease? Just pop a pill but that might not stop the spread of it either". No concern for fellow citizens. And when someone else uses that r-word, every blind fool retorts something very disrespectful indeed.

As for Bristol - I'm sorry you're learning the hard way. I truly am. And maybe I'm wrong in my aforementioned diatribe, and at least you didn't get an abortion... do your best to raise your child and DO speak up so others won't repeat the same mistakes.

16. Interestingly...
respect was discussed in my sex ed class.

However, self respect != no sex. I understand that isn't what you are claiming but it is often thrown around as if it did. Part of self respect and respect for others is learning about healthy sexual activity. Learning to prevent the spread of disease etc.

3. I remember how Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders was excoriated for...
...merely replying to a question about the benefits of teaching about masturbation: "I think that it is part of human sexuality, and perhaps it should be taught."

It is idiotic how Victorian a society we still are. Really, in so many ways, there is less social stigma associated with having a baby at 15 then masturbating or performing oral sex on one's partner at 15.

Teenage pregnancy is a big problem and it will only get worse unless the United States takes a sober extra-biblical view of our problems regarding health and how to deal with them.

4. I notice Bristol did not use the word "abstinence".
She said "prevent pregnancy".

Somehow I think that she came to this realization on her own, with no help from her parents.

8. Her parents probably wanted the A-word.
Abstinence.

I wonder why Bristol or Levi didn't use protection. Not that it's any of my business, your business, or anyone else's business of course...

6. Well, Bristol, here's a piece of friendly advice....
...that you can use with regards to preventing teenage pregnancy: stop fornicating (like Mom told you).

Unless you mean that you should have other options like birth control or unrestricted access to abortion?

Good luck with your son, Tripp, and his uncle, Trig.

9. Trig? What next, grandchildren named Geometry and Algebra?!
:hide:

At least they're names, but I suspect it's more a nominal value than anything else. Many Americans don't even know WHAT they are, much less what they're good for. :(

As if it's necessary, what with jobs flying offshore and all, it's no small wonder the teenyboppers prefer their brainless television shows. Nothing else left than their eye candy...

12. The daughter of the woman I hope will be the next Republican candidate for POTUS, that's who.
Sarah Palin running again in 2012 is probably too much for hope for, but we should do what we can to encourage it and to keep her in the limelight.

26. I agree with you post.
But, having grown up poor and in a trailer, can you please refrain from using "white trash"? I was called that many times for no reason other than my income and residence.

I'm not trying to censor you, just asking that you consider the words you're using.

27. In my view of the world growing up poor and with little means does not make a person
white trash.

As someone stated in another thread, someone with lots of money can be white trash. To me, it's never been about economical state nor of simple upbringing, it's all about opportunistic stupidity.

However, I am adult enough to understand your point and I apologize. :)

Cheers.

19. all this crap is sugar coating the major problems these two kids face
getting a job with health insurance? How many kids can drop out and get a job with health insurance like Levi?

Like who is going to support the kids? Is this baby living in the governor's mansion? Or is Bristol living at home and supported by other family members? Is the message that we should all foot the bill for our family member's mistakes?

24. Now that the baby is born I hope that is about the last we hear of
the fucking Palins and their skewing of values to fit what they do.
The next time I hear of Palin I hope it is her impeachment and some charges brought on Toddy for his involvement in state affairs.
But I suspect it will probably be when Levi's Momma gets sentenced.

abstain, but if you do it, have the kid and your family should help you out? I don't know too many 40-50 year old women (it won't be the men) who would want to be the back up for you and your kid.

28. It bugs me as an inconsistency
Because aren't they admitting they did not "want" this child? Do they really want to do that?

Reminded me of a right winger who said Obama should be against abortion, because he would never have been born. Like they can assume that Obama's mother did not want him because she wasn't married. You may still want the child even if you are single and the father won't marry you, or you don't want to marry the father. They act as if that is not possible.

30. Something that God knows that Sarah Palin doesn't is that babies born to teen mothers are
more likely to be miscarried, stillborn, born with birth defects, to die from SIDS, and to have learning disabilities. These are old facts but I do not think that they have changed in the last 15 years.

Thanks for weighing in, Bristol.

Oh, wait... "prevent" pregnancy? However could teenagers do that?

Gee, whiz, if there were only something people could use, like a little latex doohickey, or a pill, or some other way of preventing pregnancy...

gosh! There must not be, though, because they never mentioned any such technology in that government mandated abstinence only course, did they?
