...they don't ask you for "proof" that you're a nonprofit organization, charitable or religious organization of any kind, or not.

Likewise, you don't have to be an ISP to get a ".net" domain.

Often times those who have searched for a particular ".com" domain, but find it has been taken, will go with a .net, .org or whatever other options are available (such as .tv, which is the country code top level domain, or "ccTLD," for the island nation of Tuvalu).

We didn't have to jump through a lot of hoops, but we did have to provide some substantiation, as I recall. It may be that Little Arfin' Annie registered all the domain names just to keep some dastardly meanie (:blush: ) from swiping it and running some actual content on the internets under her name?

...of all type of available TLDs, including more than a few .org TLDs, and never been asked for any kind of proof of nonprofit status, whatsoever. Going back to 1993-94, I've always only registered the domains directly through Network Solutions (through internic.net back then), when domain names were actually free to register - first come, first served.

That's my anecdotal story and I'm stickin' by it!

Interesting about your church, though...

And, by the way, Ann Coulter: not worth the time to comment about.
