Kind of like a turducken....put a VW inside the trailer and ..there ya go.. a bugtrailplane

Laura Bush's Caravan Force One
by MILES ERWIN - Monday, June 9, 2008

First Lady Laura Bush isn't the sort of woman to slum it when she's on official business - even when she's on a no-frills troop carrier.

First Lady Caravan
Caravan of courage: the First Lady's private transport

When flying across Afghanistan to visit troops, the US president's wife (pictured) was cocooned in her own private luxury trailer which had been towed on board the aircraft.

With wood panelling, plush grey carpet, comfy leather seats and, most importantly, thick window shades, Mrs Bush could forget she was anywhere near the War on Terror being played out below the clouds.

First Lady Caravan 2
Inside the flying caravan

While travelling she could have been entertained by her TV and DVD player, hosted cocktail parties or, alternatively, she could have a nap in a choice of two beds.

The Airstream trailer was put on board The Spirit Of Strom Thurmond, which is named after one of the country's longest serving senators.

First Lady Caravan 3

It is one of 11 'Senior Leader In Transit Conference Capsules' the US government plans to position at various locations around the world, at a cost of £8,000 each.

1. I have a hard time picturing Michelle Obama "demanding" such a rig...
I think Michelle will be a FL in the mold of Eleanor Roosevelt - and it's well-known that Eleanor wasn't shy about sleeping in Army cots or Navy racks.

3. She wont have to demand it
It is done pretty much automatically for VIP's on traveling Mil Aircraft.

We call them "silver Bullets" and they fly on SAM flights (or Special Air Mission).

It is done to allow private meetings occur and for the VIP to sleep during the flight to arrive at desitnation ready to go to work and not have to go to a hotel or facilities before going on to what everbusiness they have at the arrival location.

They are nice too. I have been on C-17's equipped with these and toured the inside.

At any rate, she most likley still got the hotel when they arrived but that is purpose for the Sliver Bullet.

35. Not on Air Force One
Ok well technically any plane the POTUS is on is AF One, but this is not used in the normal AF One..these are used on Tactical Transport Planes going into Combat Zones..like Iraq, and Afghanistan..That big blue and white 747 gets way too much attention when going in somwhere where missiles are a distinct possiblility.

They use those on C-17 Tranports to make an office space on a cargo plane.

4. So typical of the elite to cocoon themselves in luxury in order to avoid
even looking at the people who pay their bills.

Better to wrap yourself up and pretend you don't see the starving masses. Just like before the revolution in France in 1789, most of the citizens were starving but they could always go watch the King and Queen eat lavish gourmet meals.

and maybe he should bring in Bobby Jindal to do another exorcism, just in case you're right about Strom engaging in demonic possession.

9. Considering the flak that happened when the media reported that the Clintons "took
the silverware, plates, etc." (but didn't report anything about Bush41 taking anything ...), and the minimal noting of Dan Quayle's gold-trimmed playing cards, I'm sure that any request (reasonable or no) by Michelle will be painted as the new "White House Diva's" demands ... while glossing over all of Laura Bush's excesses ...

14. Link; and that cost that the UK Metro paper gave was wildly low
http://www.metro.co.uk/weird/article.html?in_article_id=168752&in_page_id=2&in_a_source=&expand=true

I'd say getting a decent trailer for £8,000 - $15,000, perhaps, back then - would have been fairly good value, especially for government contracting. But here are more believable figures.

Because here's an article from a paper that checks its fact a little:

Changing the seat color and pockets alone was estimated in a March 12 internal document to cost at least $68,240.

In all, for the past three years the service has asked to divert $16.2 million to the effort from what the military calls the GWOT, or global war on terrorism. Congress has twice told the service that it cannot, including an August 2007 letter from Rep. John Murtha, D-Pa., to the Pentagon ordering that the money be spent on a "higher priority" need.

Officials say the Air Force nonetheless decided last year to take $331,000 from counterterrorism funds to cover a cost overrun, partly stemming from the design changes, although a senior officer said Thursday in response to inquiries that it will reverse that decision.
...
Construction of what the Air Force initially termed the new Senior Leader In-transit Conference Capsules, or SLICC, has already begun, under a contract paid from general Air Force funds. One of the 18-by-9-foot capsules has been partly completed. But McMahon said the program has recently been downsized from 10 capsules to three, plus the four pallets fitted with swiveling leather chairs, known as Senior Leader In-transit Pallets (SLIP).

Because of the cutback in the number of capsules and pallets, the program is currently estimated to cost $7.6 million.

21. the window shade is about a hundred or so bucks
the curtain in the back is, depending on material, around 500...

the tv is going at my local charity shop for about 25 bucks. pawn shops probably a few dollars more.

the two seat are "cheap" van seats. probaly around a thousand retail. the back bench are the most expensive thing in those pictures.

depending on the leather the back bench seats around 2000-4000.

i sold window fashions and upholstered for years

ya that is real luxury

34. I have no issue with this type of thing for any First Lady and i don't think it was over the top.
I think the trailer was relatively basic and blah. It is not like she had chandeliers and a hot tub in that thing.

I think that all first ladies or future men should have some extraordinary details laid out for them. I do not want my President (assuming he is not hell bent on destroying us and is therefore a legitimate President)worrying about the safety and health of his wife, beyond normal concerns. A President is already aware that his wife is in a higher level of risk due to the position he holds. I want him to be secure in the attention being paid to her health and safety to such a degree that he can devote more of his time dealing with the issues of the nation.

What our new First Lady should get for a 'silver bullet' is a replica of one of those Nascar driver's motorhomes. She could have it painted all black with a big ol' number 3 on both sides, an American flag painted across the top and assorted decals covering the rest.

Oh yeh, and a DU bumpersticker....don't forget that.

I don't have a problem with it, if other officials use similar things. $16000 (or whatever 8000 pounds is in this economy) is not that much for something they can use repeatedly.
