If Illinois Secretary of State won't sign Burris' certificate of appointment he should resign
Edited on Tue Jan-06-09 12:54 PM by bigtree
There's nothing in Illinois law which allows him to stand in the way of the legitimate appointment by the governor. There's nothing legally that he can cite in his refusal other than his political opinion of the governor.

from TPM: http://tpmelectioncentral.talkingpointsmemo.com/2008/12/illinois_sec_of_state_refuses.php

"A spokesman for Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White (D) confirmed to Election Central that White knows he does not truly have the authority to stop the appointment of Roland Burris to the Senate, but he withheld his signature from it earlier today in order to make a statement."

Burris has filed for a Writ Of Mandamus from the Illinois court, ordering White to sign the certification. He should sign it or step down.

4. It's time to return to the Rule of Law, not of Men
Certify it as the law requires, and let the Senate do its job.

6. Absolutely agree..there is a bad precedent here
Like him or not, corrupt or not,he is,at the time of the appointment, the governor. He can do this.Further, there is a racial aspect to this.It looks very bad to turn a legally appointed black man away from the senate. As Jesse Jackson said,it is becoming a racial issue.Looks like this to me:

Lester Maddox,a democrat,at work. This is a tradition the Senate does not want to revive...

or maybe like this,a Democratic sheriff in Selma ordered this:

15. Jesse White is also a minority, so be careful.
Sorry to intrude in the LOVELY stroll through racial unrest, but Sec of state Jessie White is also African American.

I am much amused by all the folks who don't have a fucking CLUE about Illinois politics who are flapping their gums on here.

:tinfoilhat:

Really. It is funny. Well, actually it kinda makes me vomit in my mouth a little bit, but I'm trying REAL hard to see the humor in it.

:banghead:

7. Sign it, ya jerk
and no signing statement. Support will build for Burris if this doesn't get resolved.

10. I'll take the judgement of Jesse White over the Burris/Blago
games any day.

He has said he will sign it if ordered by a court.

18. I agree.
Of the three of them, I'd say White is by far the most trust worthy.

13. Back off.
Haven't you ever had an opinion on something going on in another state? Did you comment on Gray Davis or Jim McGreevey or Eliot Spitzer? Do you have an opinion on the situation in Gaza?

17. Is Reid from Illinois?
Like it or not, these Senators legislate in a way that affects us nationally - unlike Representatives whose support and efforts often relate to a more local level of concern.

It's amazing how Reid's interference is tolerated and accepted while a citizen's concerns for due and correct process in the seating of this Senator is considered improper.

The Sec. of State should follow the law. And, like it or not, Illinois politics is open for debate and response. Get used to it.

16. Jesse's basically a good guy, so a simple legal spanking will satisfy me.
I predict the Illinois Supreme Court will administer it some time this week.
