HOW BIG IS WAL-MART?

This should boggle your mind!!

And scare you as well!

HOW BIG IS WAL-MART?

1 . At Wal-Mart, Americans spend $36,000,000 every hour

of every day.

2 . This works out to $20,928 profit every minute!

3. Wal-Mart will sell more from January 1 to St. Patrick's Day (March 17th) than Target sells all year.

4. Wal-Mart is bigger than Home Depot + Kroger + Target + Sears + Costco + K-Mart combined.

5. Wal-Mart employs 1.6 million people and is the largest private employer. And most can't speak English

6. Wal-Mart is the largest company in the history of the World.

7. Wal-Mart now sells more food than Kroger & Safeway combined, and keep in mind they did this in only 15 years.

8. During this same period, 31 Supermarket chains sought bankruptcy (including Winn-Dixie).

9. Wal-Mart now sells more food than any other store in the world.

10. Wal-Mart has approx 3,900 stores in the USA of which 1,906 are SuperCenters;this is 1,000 more than it had 5 years ago.

11. This year, 7.2 billion different purchasing experiences will occur at a Wal-Mart store. (Earth's population is approximately 6.5 billion.)

12. 90% of all Americans live within 15 miles of a Wal-Mart

13. Let Wal-Mart bail out Wall Street!

2. Snopes sez this generally checks out. I'm proud to say I never shop there, and I'm one of the 10
percent who DOESN'T live within 15 miles of one.

17. For one to come? Or for people to get mad at me because I'm being elitist for not shopping at one?
Trust me...Wal-Mart isn't coming here.

4. Wally world is the future they have planned for everyone.
If you look at the history of how their "growth" came to be, much of it = connections & deal-making.

Movement of capital from one organizational form to another.

That place is evil.

16. Interesting map
I didn't know there were as many Walmarts in Michigan in the 90s as the map seems to show. The Detroit area didn't get any Walmarts until 2000 so I don't remember Walmart from when I was growing up.

8. Im one of the 90%..........
there are THREE Wal-Marts near me, 2 of them are super centers. Imagine if one day they become so huge that it will be the only place to shop. All other stores will declare bankruptcy and close down. Wal-Mart will be the one and only store where you get everything. Ok maybe that's a little exaggerated but still I don't see Wal-mart getting any smaller.

10. Considering I work "in the Wal-Mart enviornment"....
... as I like to say, I haven't sold my soul, I'm just renting it. I work for a major computer company, we support Wal-Mart's servers.

$36 million an hour -- $600,000 a minute. $21,000 in profit in one minute. That's 0.035% profit.

Exxon, at the beginning of 2008, http://money.cnn.com/2008/02/01/news/companies/exxon_earnings/">posted profit margins of 0.09%. And if someone can verify my math on this one... it looks like Exxon posted higher profits than WM did even without the comparison of percentage of revenue as profit.

I know it's damning with very faint praise to compare the company with the oil industry...

13. I am nervously watching the SuperCenter being built down the road.
In a town of 6,000, we have 3 supermarkets, a few small grocery stores, incuding one that has operated for over 60 years, and one old regular Wal-Mart store.
Very old.
For years Wal-Mart declined to build a super Center here, citing the fact there were at least 3 Super Centers in a 40 mile radius.
Suddenly, big anouncement last spring a Suerpcenter is coming.
It is half built now.

I am wondering what will happen to the supermarkets. One is Winn Dixie. They really do have good beef, btw.

I am concerned not many people in this area see the danger.

15. Waiting for the corporatist/capitalist apologists to show up.
With something like, "So? They have a right to exist just like any other business." and "What? Are you jealous?"

do we tell people to be successful.

Then when they are they get demonized for being too successful.

19. That doesn't work.
Wal-Mart's "success" requires entire systems to collapse. That is not America. Wal-Mart is essentially has a war footing. People who rob banks are highly successful at baking money, but we don't allow that in our society, now do we?
