After a season of antagonistic, at times almost brutally unwatchable, hearings into all sorts of matters, it was such a wonderful relief to see this morning's hearing to approve Tom Daschle as Secretary of Health and Human Services.
He was eloquent, articulate, thoughtful and charismatic. He's going to be a great SHHS.
Better yet, everyone on that panel treated him with the utmost respect. This was the only truly bipartisan hearing I can ever recall watching. Even Orren Hatch was gracious, which is a sight I've never seen in my life. The procedings were so dignified, civilized and intelligent (for a change).
Daschle has clearly put enormous effort into scrutinizing, at a deep level, problems related to health insurance. I think he's going to be a sensational Secretary of Health and Human Services, and he's going to be able to finally--and once and for all--accomplish this task of improving our health care system.
As a post-script, it was tremendously inspiring and poignant beyond belief to see Senator Edward Kennedy chair this morning's hearings.
This hearing really made me feel extremely proud to be a Democrat and an American. Yeah, it sounds corny. But until November, I forgot what that feeling is, and it's not a bad feeling.
