Obama Picks a Conscience for the CIA

By Ray McGovern
January 8, 2009

At long last. Change we can believe in.

In choosing Leon Panetta to take charge of the CIA, President-elect Barak Obama has shown he is determined to put an abrupt end to the lawlessness and deceit with which the administration of George W. Bush has corrupted intelligence operations and analysis.

First and foremost, the appointment gives hope that torture and “rendition” (a euphemism for kidnapping people for delivery to foreign torture chambers) is over — or will be in less than two weeks.

Character counts. And so does integrity.

With those qualities, and the backing of a new President, Panetta is equipped to lead the CIA out of the wilderness into which it was taken by sycophantic directors with very flexible attitudes toward truth, honesty and the law — directors who deemed it their duty to do the President’s bidding — legal or illegal; honest or dishonest.

2. Nice piece. I was pleasantly surprised without knowing that much about it,
because it seemed to be a break with the past, not choosing a good ol' boy. Years ago Panetta was my congressman and he seemed like a decent guy then and while putting Clinton back together.

So I am quite happy to see that Ray McGovern is also very happy about Panetta and he of course knows something about the CIA.

3. Why am I not surprised that this hasn't flown onto the Greatest Page? I'm sure it will get there

eventually but it sure is a lot slower trip then it is for a thread bitching about Obama.

Ray McGovern endorses Obama's pick for CIA and there are yawns. Pathetic.

4. This is a pick I seriously agree with.
...when I heard of this pick, and the following apoplexy by Feinstein and Rockefeller, I know the pick had to be a good one.

After researching some more, it is indeed a good pick.

There have been few picks that I entirely feel comfortable about, but this one is an exception. And a few others.

5. Hah, and Ray was one I wanted Obama to pick to throw dirt in DiFi's face...

I still think it would have been choice to have Obama say to DiFi, "Well, OK Dianne, You want someone more experienced in intelligence? Here you go, I'll do you a favor and appoint Ray McGovern. That would have shut her up REAL quick!

Anyway, it's just about as good having Ray McGovern give kudos to Panetta. Confirms that this is one of, if not the best of Obama's picks so far. Credit where credit is due here Barack!

6. Ray McGovern's judgements carry quite a bit of heft.
I trust this guy to see through 7 layers of BS, so his endorsement is enough to give me cautious hope.
