I'm Thinkin We Might Wanna Consider A 48 Hour Limit On The 'Greatest Page '
Many of us are busy as hell, and might not see these posts right away. And when we do, and are wanting to promote such threads, we get:

"Error: you can only recommend threads which were started in the past 24 hours"

With the multiple crimes of this Administration coming to light, I know I don't wanna miss a thing. And I'd like to be able to promote those threads that are on top of the story.

What say you???

1. They are only supposed to stay on Greatest 24 hours.
"The Greatest Page lists discussion topics which have been recommended by DU members. Topics can be recommended for 24 hours after they are first posted on our message board. This page shows topics that have received at least five recommendations, and topics remain on the page for 24 hours. To recommend a topic, click the link on the post that says "Recommend Topic for Greatest Page." Members are unable to recommend their own topics. Please be aware that the DU administrators can easily track which members recommend which threads. Individuals who abuse this feature will lose the privilege of recommending topics."

3. Hey Mad... I Swear, I Do Understand The Stated Rules...
And I'd like to offer up the plight of the poor schmuck who's work day is paid for in the eight hour time frame, but in reality, between traffic, public transit, and a job that prevents the use of internet message boards, we might wanna realize that keeping current with the current events is life-style prohibitive. With the upcoming watergate-like slew of stories, we might just wanna keep the ones floated to the top... on top for one more day.

Some of us, once in a while, miss the most important stories, entirely.

Just a thought...

17. I read Latest, seldom read Greatest...so I won't argue.
The Greatest is too often just duplicates of posts cheering on a person or candidate. LBN and Latest page will usually keep me up.

I was just offering the paragraph.

20. No Sweat... But I Often Tell People Who've Never Come To Our Site...
That you don't have to post if you don't want to, and that this is the greatest clearing-house of political (and other) information on the net. I tell them, check out the latest, and the greatest, and generally you'll be up to awareness, mui pronto.

Edited on Thu Mar-22-07 09:17 PM by hlthe2b
maybe EarlG could program it so that you could see previous GREATEST 24 hour postings, just as we can see older pages of GD or LBN? That way, if you've been gone a couple of days, you could quickly catch up with the big stories...

8. That Would Be Cool
Kind of like the homepage archives. You could continue to kick them, recommend them, but after 24\48 hours you would have to go to the 'Greatest Archives" page to see what you've missed.

Or something like that...

14. Great idea...
I have wanted an all time greatest page where we can see the posts which got the all time highest vote totals. I like the 24 limit on the current greatest page, but it would be great to have multiple greatest pages, with greatest of the week, the month, the year, and the greatest of all time. It would be nice to have a way to vote for the best posts past the 24 hour limit as well.

Or will it?

5. My argument against:
I only have a limited time each day to access DU, but I do access it daily. When I do, I want to quickly get to the news/opinions that people are talking about. It's helpful to me not to have to wade through stuff that's 48 hours old to get to the new stuff.

As an alternate idea, maybe there could be a function where each member could select how long a particular thread stays on the greatest page?

10. Actually if recs was a sortable header...
Then you could bring the highest recs not in the archives to the top of the GD list. It's probably an easy change too.

16. I like the idea...
A forum where the mods can post the stupidist comments from the people who got tombstoned. I wouldn't want just anyone to be able to post there or else it would turn into personal attacks around the clock, but if mods had a special forum where at their discretion they could post the days dumbest posts for all to see.

13. well, a decision is needed pronto
for this thread on the greatest page has now a limited shelf life.

perhaps they should have the option at the bottom of the page like the Latest page has
More > 1 2 3 4 5 6 ...etc. which will link to the previous 24 hr page? although the pages will be changing constantly.

anyway, it would allow response if necessary in the originating forum, but not recs from there. I know i've responded to threads i haven't been able to rec, but only kick.

Elad can figure it out, i'm sure of it.

21. You may have a point there, but what's the limit?
I see what you're saying. Big stories that get 100+ recs suddenly get pushed over that 24 Hr. cliff, never to be heard of again.

But what should the time limit be? Is 48 Hours too much? They might crowd out the "latest and greatest" news or opinions.

Actually, I would be in favor of upping the 5 rec requirement. Sometimes, there are more recommended stories than I can read, and I'm here daily.

28. A Greatest Page Forum might be a good compromise.
Send the very best (maybe 50 or more recs) to that forum after they are retired.

29. wow -- i totally agree!
often caught very important stories only because they were referred to in another thread.

i check in all the time -- but weekends, especially, mean that i might only see things on sunday.

maybe an archived "greatest" index?
