25% 5-year survival rate for Elizabeth? Not so.
Excerpt from NYT piece on Elizabeth:

According to statistics from the cancer society, only 26 percent of women with stage IV breast cancer survive for five years. However, the society said that statistic should not be applied to women like Mrs. Edwards who have recurrences, but only to women who are stage IV when the disease is first diagnosed. Mrs. Edwards had “regional” disease at the time of diagnosis, meaning it had spread to some lymph nodes; five-year survival for women in that category is 81.3 percent, and cancer specialists said that the stage at initial diagnosis is the one that still counts.

1. That's reassuring.
My girlfriend was diagnosed at the same time as Elizabeth, so this has got her worries up.

2. Inffairness to the NYT, that statement was actually made by
Elizabeth's Doctor during the Press Conference today. I know I was quite upset when I heard the Doc say it.

We all know at least someone who has proven all the Doctors wrong, and I sure hope Elizabeth can do that.

7. Yes. She could consider that.
She could also consider medicine.

9. Survival rates are measured from the time of diagnosis.
The 5 year/81 percent figure applies to the date of her original diagnosis. I have seen a study that found the median survival time for breast cancer mets to bone as 71 months, as measured from the time of initial recurrence. She is likely to beat that figure due to her relative youth, health (other than the cancer) and access to top-notch care. 9 or 10 year survival from this point is not unheard of, but most do not go that long.

14. Confusing-as "regional" still stage 4. For " postive"cases only, are there published survival
tables?

Says years to death for 62 yr old both breasts 17 nodes one side and 21 nodes on the other, no mets other than in breasts, taking tamoxifen last 2 years?

10. Well, that explains everything.
How it can be treatable without being curable, and why she's determined to move ahead. Whew!

12. As I've said in other threads, breast cancer is never curable
when it is diagnosed in any form. All that can be done is treat it. Some forms are easier to treat than others, and result in long periods with no recurrence--sometimes no recurrence at all. But the lack of recurrence is not "cure"--it just means the patient eventually died of something else. Even if she lived to a grand old age first.

16. Her inital diagnosis was made in late 2004.
She found a lump in September 2004 but delayed action until after the presidential election.
