OMG! Have you seen Fargo?!
I laughed so hard. It reminded me of how stupid Sara Palin is so much! I couldn't stop laughing. If you've never seen it, I suggest renting it.

Okay... good night.

62. I hate gore and unnecessary violence. Having said that I gotta say I LOVED
Fargo for some damn reason. I watch it every now and then if its the only thing on and for some reason I want to watch a movie. Francis McDormand and William F. Macy were briliant. And so was Steve Buschemmi (or however you spell it). It has that dark morality of an old Roger Corman 'B' movie starring Boris Karloff or Vincent Price.

Whether you like it or not, Fargo was a comedy.

That's why I describe No Country for Old Men as being like Fargo with none of the humor.

I almost left the theater, but my ex convinced me to stay. It is my #1 all time worst movie pick. I didn't find it funny. I found it to be disgusting. And the accents were like nails on a chalkboard to me. Sitting through 2 hours of that was pure torture.

8. Que?
Nobody is actually stupid in the movie. They are all (bar one)articulate and their scheme is quite intelligently thought out. The point of this movie is not to point out how stupid people are, but how greed and circumstance may make intelligence irrelevant. That is, the best laid plans go awry. It is also a cautionary tale of impulse vs deliberative tenacity.

I think you are confusing colloquialism and regional accent with stupidity.

21. The equation of dialects with lack of intelligence and education is very common, sadly.
Especially when the dialect has grammatical differences from Standard American English, such as the dialects of many Southerners and African-Americans

I have a North Central accent that fits the "Fargo" stereotype quite well and I sure as hell ain't stupid.

35. Jerry Lundegaard and Carl Showalter are both very stupid; Gaear Grimsrud is rather stupid too
(that's the William H. Macy, Steve Buscemi and Peter Stormare characters).

Lundegaard has been very stupid about trying to defraud the car company about the loans, and hires 2 people he knows nothing about for the kidnap; his attempt to escape was never going to work. Showalter leaves a huge trail of hookers and threatened bar staff behind him, after the dumbest move of all - not getting proper license plates for a car you're using for a crime (or you can blame that on Jerry too). He also quibbles about paying a few dollars for parking - again, drawing attention to himself. Grimsrud too was more interested in getting laid, and thus noticed, helping to get him traced.

Nothing to do with the accents, I'll agree.

41. The movie is filled with smart people with regional accents making smart decisions
The Coen brothers play the accents for laughs, to be sure, but a perfect example is the scene between the cop and the guy shoveling his driveway who overheard the "funny lookin' little guy" talk about how he was "goin' crazy up at the lake."

Or the two women in the bar, with perhaps the thickest accents in the whole movie, giving Marge more clues on "the little guy" and his friend "the Marlboro man." All of these little bits and pieces led up to the climax of the film.

The "Marge" character was not only a rock-solid cop but a whip-smart detective as well...but she didn't "crack the case" on her own. She had help...help from people with regional accents.

I think it's more of a matter of "selective stupidity." For example, I do not believe that everyone from Texas is stupid, just as I do not believe that everyone from Texas is a card-carrying member of MENSA. But when I hear Bush fire up his fake-ass Texas accent and talk about smokin' bin Laden out of his cave, I think "Here is a stupid man talking in a fake regional accent."

:patriot:

19. Hey, us Fargoans arent stupid!
Palin, though, has one redeeming quality, she destroys the myth that the accent is the result of Scandinavian influence, because people of Scandinavian ancestry aren't a major component of the Palin's home state of Idaho.

As for how us Upper-Midwesterners actually talk...

85. Buscemi was a NYC firefighter before acting, he helped on 9/11
He went back specifically to help try and find his fallen brothers. He collects antique firefighting equipment because it was his occupation before he became an actor.

And Fargo is totally brilliant, as is Raising Arizona and The Big Lebowski and all the others. My personal favorite, not to say it's the best, just my favorite, is Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?

24. If only Palin was as smart as Marge Gunderson
While managing a major county sheriffs department solved the crime through good old police work while pregnant and eating and maintaining her insecure husband and eating and buying her husband worms and eating a lot! and exploring the possibility of an affair with a high school sweetheart while pregnant and on a trip to the 'Cities' to chase down a lead (a true multitasker) and eating some more and not being a bad shot at all with a 38, all through a northern Minnesota winter.

I knew Marge Gunderson. And you, Sarah Palin, are no Marge Gunderson.

Which is why, despite the juxtaposition of surreal violence and stupidity, this is a wonderful film. Marge, and her relationship with her husband, shine through the entire film as a beacon of stability, sense, and warmth despite the surreal. Just what we all needed to survive the Bush years.

I really think this is a great film, and I've watched a lot of film (I have a top 10 list with 100 films on it, 90 of which most people around me have never heard of).

46. Francis McDormand nailed an Academy Award as Marge Gunderson
Edited on Sat Jan-10-09 11:14 AM by Cyrano
She is such a great actress that I didn't realize she was the same woman who played the wife of the imbecile deputy in "Mississippi Burning," (the woman Gene Hackman was interested in).

Her performance in "Fargo" is one that most other actresses can only envy. Too bad she didn't have any scenes in the movie with Steve Buscemi. One can only imagine the screen exploding with the two of them playing off of each other.

47. If you want to see a truly funny Coen brothers film watch The Big Lebowski.
I didn't care for Fargo, The Big Lebowski is a truly funny movie however. The next Coen Brothers movie was actually recently being filmed just two blocks from my parent's home, whether or not the movie is any good remains to be seen but it will be interesting seeing my parent's neighborhood done up 1950's style at least.

49. Except Margie is likeable.
Unless you were comparing Palin to the woodchipper guys.

52. Of course the really funny thing
Is that Chief Gundersonn was hands down the smartest person in the movie. I really enjoyed her as a strong and very smart character.

53. When I saw No Country for Old Men
I found it and Fargo so remarkably similar that I thought the Coens actually just made it to say "Cormac McCarthy ripped us off".

63. Coen Brothers have their formula for sure:
Well-meaning, yet flawed people get caught up in a crime.

61. The scene where Marge "catches up" with her friend in the restaurant
It's so out of place in the movie, nearly as awkward as the conversation in it.

Brilliance.

69. "He was circumcised."
Or was it he "wasn't?"

Either way, probably the funniest line in a movie in decades, and definitely the best answer to a cop asking "any other distinguishing marks?"

70. That scene was hysterical! And when Margie and her husband
Edited on Sat Jan-10-09 02:46 PM by Ilsa
speak so unpassionately about everything, but you know the feeling is there.

At the end of the movie:
"And here it is, such a beautiful day," Margie says to the murderer during whiteout winter weather.

"Oh, I think I'm gonna barf!"

It is one of the top 100 movies on my top 10 list (i've never been able to reduce it to just 10). It is a fun movie.
