Macy's Store Closings

blogs.wsj.com | January 8, 2009 12:41 PM

the Journal previewed Wednesday night, Macy's this morning announced the closing of 11 stores, a move that came after a rough holiday season. Macy's also said Thursday that same-store sales for December fell 4%, amid what it called "the most challenging economic environment in memory." Here's the list of the store locations Macy's is closing:

-- Ernst & Young Plaza (Citicorp Plaza), Los Angeles (135,000 square feet; 136 employees; opened in 1986)
-- The Citadel, Colorado Springs, Colo. (195,000 square feet; 105 employees; opened in 1984)
-- Westminster Mall, Westminster, Colo. (156,000 square feet; 110 employees; opened in 1986)
-- Palm Beach Mall, West Palm Beach, Fla. (190,000 square feet; 71 employees; opened in 1979)
-- Mauna Lani Bay Hotel, Island of Hawaii (3,000 square feet; 3 employees; opened in 1983)
-- Lafayette Square, Indianapolis (160,000 square feet; 84 employees; opened in 1974)
-- Brookdale Center, Brooklyn Center, Minn. (195,000 square feet; 72 employees; opened in 1966)
-- Crestwood Mall, St. Louis (166,000 square feet; 176 employees; opened in 1969)
-- Natrona Heights Plaza, Natrona Heights, Pa. (73,000 square feet; 124 employees; opened in 1956)
-- Century III Furniture and Clearance, West Mifflin, Pa. (83,000 square feet; 3 employees; opened in 2000)

1. Macy's took Marshall Field's, a chicago institution,
screwed it up, and people stopped shopping there.

Serves them right.

3. If people had shopped at Marshall Fields
They wouldn't have needed to sell themselves to Macy's. Typical Chicago bullshit. Marshall Fields was failing precisely because its so-called 'status as an "institution" wasn't paying the bills. Macy's did Chicago a favor.

10. Marshall Fields took over Hudsons here in Detroit (actually I think Dayton-Hudson.....
.....which was based in Minneapolis, took over Hudsons and Fields, then was taken over by Target, which changed all the stores to Marshall Fields, before the eventual takeover by Macy's - whew! I'm dizzy just from that rundown), and quite honestly I liked Field's a lot better than Macy's. I really miss the Field Gear brand. I shopped at Macy's reluctantly when I lived in New York, but I really don't like it. Black, grey and beige aren't the only colors that people want their clothes in, contrary to Macy's corporate philosophy.

2. I'm sad for the employees but
not for the store. WAAAYYY overpriced stuff, even on sale. I can get just as good of stuff at Gottschalks (a local chain -- also in danger of bankruptcy) at 1/3 the price of Macy's.

5. They bought out our Meir & Frank's here in the PNW
And put their ugly name on the store. I will not forgive them for that. I will not shop at a Macy's.

6. I'm surprised ours isn't on the list.
I don't think their sales have been all that great.

8. Just a preview of things to come. Macy's will be shopping for bankruptcy mouthpieces in a year.
