SNL Maddow Skit was homophobic drivel
NBC should apologize to Rachel, an employee of theirs, and the gay community as a whole. Just replace her in that skit with a black person or a Jew. Do you think it would have passed the joke censor smell test? I don't. It was extremely personal, even going so far as calling her a dyke! In case they don't know it dyke is as bad as fag. It's a perfect example of how the gay community is treated by society, and meanwhile they all laugh.

14. "What makes you so sure?" - Are you kidding?
"What makes you so sure?"

That I am gay? Well I have sex with a person with the same parts between the belly button and knees that I do, and I love it!!! So, yes I am sure I am gay, thanks for asking...

What makes me sure that it is funny, because I am not some fucking loon... I know that if you can not laugh at yourself, then you really are dead inside. I also recall that I laughed, and if I remember that is one of the MAIN parts of the whole "Is it funny" thing...

Jesus, there are some real issues out there, we have Obama and the Democratic congress telling us to sit down and shut up... SNL, really not my concern.

I would like to see the snl skit so I can judge for myself. I could not find it on youtube. Do you have a link? I wonder what Rachel thinks of the skit. I think Rachel has a great sense of humor. She is awesome...I love her show.

3. The Blago part just wasn't funny.
I think Abby Elliot did a decent Rachel impersonation, though.

6. I was a bit put off by the way it was played....
Edited on Sun Jan-11-09 06:36 PM by BrklynLiberal
the Burris character calling the Rachel Character by all the names of well-known gay women. At the end when he said he was like the Dutch boy with his finger in the dike...I thought it was not funny.
I am not sure it was homophobic, as much as really tasteless. It came across as if it could have been written by Rush Limbergercheese.

The actress who did Rachel was pretty good...

11. Yes it's homophobic
It's the equivalent of calling a black person the N-word (notice how we aren't even allowed to say that) or the F-word (for gay men). Being a gay man I can tell you it is offensive and homophobic. Get with it people, gays are really the new black. Except it's more like the black of the 40's or 50's.

7. SNL is really not that great at satire.
At least I don't think they are.

I also don't think JibJab is that good either

18. What can she say? She works for NBC.
Just for the record - the bit was not funny, or clever, or even remotely entertaining. Oh, and it was offensive as well.

9. I've not seen it
but if it is SNL, any homophobia was gravy on the way to serving the sexism that is part and parcel of the place. And I say this as a gay man. Sure, they are homophobic, but only in their rush to be as sexist as possible.
I repeat that I have not seen this, I'm just going from the known knowns of that strange precinct.

16. I agree. The finger in the dike bit was what really went over the line.
I was not the least bit amused, and I'm usually pretty good at being able to laugh at myself. That was nothing short of gross.

19. Humor is tends to be subjective.
Edited on Sun Jan-11-09 07:32 PM by Political Heretic
Take Dave Chapelle for instance.

Racist trash or humor with a biting make-you-think undertone? People disagree. Even Chapelle wasn't sure...

Reasonable people can disagree, and its probably better not to imply that anyone who thought it was funny is a homophobe.

As someone who does not identify as straight (nor gay for that matter) I'm starting to get really tired of the way "homophobe" is being wielded as a weapon of inquisition to purge "heretics"

It's getting old.

20. The impersonations all lacked substance, as did the writing.
Hair, and a jacket. Mouth held to the right, and some slight over enunciation. The actress in no way tried to capture Rachael's style or delivery beyond the minor physical affectation. Fail.

Burres. A set up and a punchline. Then a set up and the same punch line. Five times. Each attempt longer and further afield. Burres is a character rich with lampoon opportunities. They chose one punchline as his entire being and did not even try to capture his personality or vocal delivery. Fail.

Bloggo. First line was a reference to Rachael's sexual orientation and not an attempt to characterize Bloggo. It was gratuitous and not funny. Then, more of the same. It went down from there. A wig and some hate. Fail.

Shallow, rushed and boring. Classic SNL.

23. I don't know. It might have passed if you made that substitution.
The clip was mostly making fun of the other party, showing how horrible they were. They might well have made a racial comment and let it go.

25. I thought the point was to make fun of homophobia
Not that I'm aware of rod Blagojevic having any reputation for homophobia, but I've never thought SNL was especially good at political satire. I figure Rachel Maddow has her own show, so if she disses SNL I'll revise my opinion about whether the jokes were directed at her rather than Balgojevic.

28. that's what they would probably say was there intention
It didn't work because Rachel has never had to deal with that on her show, so there was nothing to parody - actually just once and she shrugged it off with class - instead they had this actress portraying her just nonresponding - so the whole just made no sense.

26. Eh... is boring offensive?
The Burris character was funny, the guy playing Blagovejich (sp) was kinda funny.

But the Maddow character was just kinda..eh. They tried to play her al earnest and seriousness which isn't what Maddow does. It would have been better to have Maddow as Maddow since she's already funnier.

And yeah the "dyke" jokes kept coming and they are cheap humor. But really, has SNL been funny since the 80s?

BTW, plenty of gay people make dyke and fag jokes. I don't' mind if they are being clever rather then just dumb or hurtful about it. The primary sin here is that the skit just wasn't that funny.

The whole point was to put the gay insults in the mouth of Blago, a cretin.
