I don’t remember if it was Blumenthal’s or Stephanopolous’ book about their time in the Clinton administration, but one of them related the story about Bill Clinton preparing for one of his State of the Union addresses. He worked on it, practiced it, rehearsed it before different groups of staffers for weeks.

Finally, the night he was to deliver the address to Congress, some numb nuts loaded the State of the Union speech from the previous year into the Teleprompter. Clinton was momentarily foozled, but recovered and began giving his speech from memory. Meanwhile, they were frantically unloading the wrong speech and loading the right one into the machine, finally catching up with Clinton several minutes in. Clinton, noting that the right words were coming up on the screen, went back to reading the speech as written, and nobody noticed a thing.

Can you guess what sort of hell would have broken loose if the same thing had happened to Chimpy? My conjecture is that he would just read what was coming up on the screen, and never have a clue that he was giving last year’s address. And the media wouldn’t have the bad taste to notice either.

And Leno, and O'Brien, and Ferguson, and Kimmel, and on and on.
