3. Ummmm......
I don't care anymore.

It's hard to be disappointed that way.

And the bad news hurts a little less.

6. Domestic stimulus plans could get us moving on climate change
Edited on Fri Jan-16-09 11:11 PM by Juche
The US isn't the only nation working on a stimulus plan. China is working on a $600 billion stimulus plan. The EU is working on a $300 billion plan.

A good deal of that money is going to go to updating infrastructure, which will help advance renewable energy and 21st century transportation and healthcare.

For example Obama talks about updating the schools, healthcare IT and renewable energy as part of the stimulus. China is talking the same thing. So instead of the world spending $2-3 trillion on consumer goods, over the next couple of years those funds will end up being spent to update roads, schools, healthcare and energy infrastructure. To me that is the silver lining on this economic crisis. THere will be alot more spending on education, renewable energy and healthcare in the next couple of years than there would be otherwise.

8. Gas is under $2 a gallon
And should stay there a while. Houses are back to affordable levels, so if you have good credit and you've been responsible enough to save up a decent down payment you can find some great deals.

10. Only if you're a failed Fortune 500 executive

it must be nice getting 700 billion from the government, on top of the billions you've already swindled during the last 8 years.

14. 12 best things about economic collapse:
1. Even Wal-Mart is hurting

2. Schwarzenegger may get recalled like his predecessor

3. Deep discounts at dollar stores

4. Gas prices actually went down

5. Bartering is back in vogue

6. Pot lucks aren't just for po' folks anymore

7. The dollar's plunged but the peso is down more, so there are still bargains south of the border.

8. Jobs are so scarce that undocumented migrants are going home and illegal immigration is down.

9. It's cool to go to community college; nobody can afford UC anymore and they're hardly letting anybody in due to budget cuts.

10. Mom's Depression-era cookbook is coming in handy. Dandelion wine, anyone?

11. Resale wear is chic, not cheap.

12. Bush lowered the bar so low, anything Obama does will be an improvement!

17. I'm not sure there's any good news nationally
In Michigan, we've been getting some good economic news in December and January. It's been announced that the Volt batteries will be built in Michigan and bring 14,000 jobs (possible 50,000 jobs over 5 years). A123 Systems will also open a plant to produce lithium-ion batteries which will bring thousands of jobs to Michigan. Hemlock Semiconductor Corp., which makes quartz-based polycrystalline silicon for solar panels, announced in Dec. a $3-billion expansion in Saginaw. We also expect announcements soon for there to be 3 film studios build here. One 100 million dollar studio is expected to be built in Allen Park, MI.

This is the only good economic news I can think of but it applies to Michigan. The only problem is this news doesn't really help now. People need jobs now. But at least it give me hope for a better future. I hope we hear some good national economic news soon.

18. We have national connectivity to facilitate unprecedented large scale barter
with sites like Craigslist.

Honestly, I'm thinking that Farmer's/Green Markets and sites like Craigslist will ultimately be our saving grace if the economy really goes south. Unlike other eras, we have the ability to network on a huge scale which could literally be lifesaving in any severe depression.

20. Yes. Bankruptcy won't carry such a stigma anymore
People are also starting to really think hard about 401k's, a credit society, Repuke'onomics, arbitrage, hedging, short selling, corruption, ceo-pay, healthcare, mortgages as piggy banks, wage inequality, etc.

Oh and people are consuming less soul and earth destroying worthless crap.

24. Speaking as a canary in the coal mine, I think it's picking up
I do some temp work, among other things, in NYC. The first slump for me was back in April '08. Things picked up in July, then came to a halt in December with the Wall Street collapse. This week it's busy again. I work as support staff in law firms and finance. Temps are the first to go and the last to return to work, but I am getting a lot of calls this week. I experienced the Wall Street crisis before it was official, and I think now I am experiencing the comeback. FWIW.
