Barack Obama Selects the Dead for Inaugural Ball: “It Was Quite an Honor”
1/15/09, 5:03 pm EST

Just a week after confirming their first tour in five years, the reunited Dead are booked to rock the Mid-Atlantic Inaugural Ball in Washington, D.C. on January 20th. “A DJ will open up — it’s a long, strange trip!,” Mickey Hart jokes to Rolling Stone (the DJ in question is celeb spinner DJ Cassidy). “ picked us specifically,” he adds, “so it was quite an honor. There was a short list and we made the cut.” <snip>

2. The Dead without the Fat Man are kind of like Black Sabbath without Ozzy.
Never the same and never as good.

3. There is no accounting for taste I guess. I've seen the Grateful Dead when they sucked and also when

they shone.

I've taken virgins to shows and they freaked out and became fans for life, and I've taken virgins to shows and they didn't like them.

So, of course, you are quite entitled to your opinion.

but I've been to Phil and Friends shows that really rocked out, even if you haven't.

7. Never said the reconstituted Dead sucked. But the Fat Man ruled!
and Black Sabbath was never the same after Ozzy left the band.

5. I agree
As good as Warren Haynes is he is still no Jerry.

I have seen some good Phil and Ratdog shows, though. On their own they are pretty good.

The Dead playing the O'naugaration? Way cool.

6. well sure
if Jerry could be replaced, he wouldn't have been so remarkable, there was only one.

But that doesn't mean the rest of them don't make fine music.
