Barack Obama has called for this day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, to be a Day of Service. While a lot of us have to work, a lot of people do have the day off along with their children.

So despite the hoopla and excitement that currently fill our lives getting ready for tomorrow's festivities, there are people hurting in our society. There are areas that need fixing.

There is a lot to do that would require a year of service. But we do have a day of service, and that's a start.

So what are you going to do today for the day of service? And if you are at work, or otherwise can't physically participate, what would you do if you had a day of service.

How would you use the day to better your neighborhood, your city, your state, your country?

Just go to a food kitchen, serve them and listen to them.

Am also working on the SpEd high school World Geography curriculum study guide for next year AND creating a rubric for a report to be done on West & Central africa for my World geography class.

Most likely help out in nursing homes by visiting the elderly, which I have done from time to time and felt it quite rewarding and enlightening.

unpaid service every work day, plus several more, every weekend. Not just today.

Today I'm resting. Tomorrow morning I will hit my classroom at 6am to input all the grades I gathered during this weeks paper-grading session in time to print progress reports before school starts.

I help with the local food bank. I help connect families to available assistance programs. Every month of the year.

Is there something else you'd like me to be doing just today?

I'm resting. It better prepares me to dive back into the services, paid and unpaid, I provide every week, every month of the year. I do a better job when I'm rested, refreshed, and operating on a full tank.

There are 365 days in a year and someone wants to pat themselves on the back for helping someone on just one of those days. Or use some bullshit excuse like, "I really wanted to help someone this year on the "Day of Service" but I had to work, maybe next year."

You should make an effort to help someone everyday and if you require a "Day of Service" you probably also need a year of "Don't be an Asshole".

I seriously think I would withdraw a couple hundred dollars and randomly give $10 or $20 to the people that are on almost any street corner holding a sign for food and help. No questions ask, they can use it however they want.
