CBS News Exclusive: New Finding in Pat Tillman's Death

Pat TillmanWASHINGTON (KCBS) -- CBS News has learned that an investigation by the Pentagon inspector-general into the "friendly fire" death of San Jose's own football-star-turned-soldier, Pat Tillman, will blame nine officers, including four generals, for failing to follow regulations and using poor judgement in a series of missteps that kept the truth of how he died from his family for more than a month.

The official version was that the former NFL player had died in a firefight with the enemy and it was only after a national televised memorial service was held that Tillman's wife and parents were told he had been mistakenly shot by one of his own men.

Until now only the soldiers who were part of Tillman's unit of Army Rangers have been disciplined for the events which resulted in his death. It will be up to the Army to decide what if any disciplinary action will be taken against the nine officers.

In May of 2002, Tillman turned down a $3.6-million contract with the NFL Arizona Cardinals to enlist in the Army. He fought in Iraq, then Afghanistan, where he died in April of 2004.

1. This is news? Oh, yeah
maybe to Chris Matthews and Katie Curic.
I thought this came out years ago

4. No, it is news. An investigation has been ongoing because his family
didn't believe the story they were fed.

9. Nothing will come of this except a verbal reprimand to
the generals and the low officers will pay the price.

3. Hopefully, the mighty shall fall ...
What a tangled web we weave ...

Like Watergate and Scooter's convictions, it's always the cover-up that comes back to bite these smarmy bureaucrats in the ass.

Duty, Honor and Country seemingly don't mean squat to these General Officers ... only the big sell. :(

As it should be.

6. Using the body of a dead guy to further the cause of war is repugnant,
especially for generals. But we're getting used to this behavior, aren't we.

7. Yes, the lowest form of a scoundrel. Karma's gonna be a ...
Bitch for these pompous General Officers. I believe in both good and bad forces in this world. These Generals have definitely upset the balance toward the dark side. :(

5. I suspect alterior motives here
Namely, I suspect another attempted distraction story. I guess they realized the publicized torture transcripts boasting of confessions by KSM that were three years old didn't work.

Boy, it sure must suck to be in the Bush administration, knowing any day you could get thrown to the sharks to save the captain of the sinking ship, all for following orders that you risked your ass for following anyway.

Oh well. Fuck em.

What should really happen is that those guilty in the cover-up should be sent up the same hill and shot by their own forces as they plead not to shoot, just as Pat Tillman did. After all, I bet these generals are 'Old Testament' types anyway, and they would appreciate the irony of their demise as appropriately Biblical.

8. i've always thought there was something fishy about the whole thing
i mean, not that many soldiers have been killed in afganistan, but one of them happens to be a noted former football player that turned down big money to become a ranger? seemed a little to, um, convenient to me... (got my tin foil out, so flame me).
