Repub Filibustering...
Well, so much for reaching across the aisle... based on the repuba-blather over the weekend regarding the stimulus package, I'm guessing the Senate repubs will threaten a filibuster

based on past response from Reid - he's gonna cave in to the repub whining

Not that Reid will grow a pair in time, but I have a suggestion

Let the repubs filibuster, and outside the senate doors I would have a big clock

Top line would read:
Republican Economy-Job Creation Filibuster below would be the hours/minutes ticking away

Bottom Line: # of jobs lost due to filibuster
(using 500,000 as a base/divided by a 30 day month/24 hours = 694 jobs lost per hour) - set up the timer to click off about 12 jobs per minute.

next, I would have a Dem out there every hour or so, stand next to the clock and giving media updates - this way the clock is in any still photos or video the media may run.

I'm sure the repubs would have their own little pressers, in this case I would suggest that progressive commentators run a split screen of the count-down clock and repubs blathering...

1. I don't think they have the numbers to filibuster
I doubt very, very much they can hold on to every single repub.

4. I think they have a chance right now due to the Frankin seat and Clinton
seats not fully seated. Also is Kennedy back at work yet?

5. Franken isn't seated but neither is Coleman
And if Gillibrand isn't sworn in yet, she'll be sworn in today. No, I don't think Kennedy is back at work. Here are the numbers as they now stand, including Gillibrand: Democrats and indies caucusing with Dems, minus Ted: 57. Rebubs: 40. I can't see Collins or Snowe filibustering.

6. still need 60 for cloture
by your numbers, the Dems have to pick up 3 repub votes, probably more because you know there will a few DINO's...

It's doable for the repubs, between arm twisting and knee-capping it could be done.

7. The key is to force them to actually do it. So far all that's been required of them
is the threat of filibuster to get Reid to cave.

9. you got it
and also to get media attention as to who is holding things up

Dems have been behind on framing the issues, and "fighting" from a defensive position. Whether it's the stimulus bill or one to declare bees as the national bug - if the repubs want to filibuster - make them filibuster

up to now, it's like a kid threatening to hold his/her breath and the parents caving in to avoid watching the kid turn blue.

my sister use to pull that when she was very young, it would freak out Dad out. Went so far as to as the doctor what to do. Doc said, let her hold her breath, when she passes out she'll start breathing again - might scare her enough to reconsider the merits of holding one's breath

12. Great idea. Love the clock, and with Olberman/Maddow and ratings, it _would_ get covered.
I bet they'd even run it continuously during their shows.

God I am so sick of Reid's wussiness.

16. That job clock or a list of Senators filibustering is a good idea too.
Make them famous for being the obstructionists they are, and if a few of ours decide to work against us and get caught too, so much the better.

8. I think the odds are very good Obama will get the 60
and very small that the repubs will filibuster this. We'll see.

10. Can anybody tell me....
why I never hear Dems talking on the MSM? Is Boner the only person they can interview?

"I would have a Dem out there every hour or so, stand next to the clock and giving media updates - this way the clock is in any still photos or video the media may run."

That's a great idea, but the MSM will never cover the clock and the Dems.

19. Because the Republicans OWN the MSM, Lock, Stock, and Barrel
When there is a filibuster, the Mighty Slime Machine will cover the Repiggies doing the filibustering,
but you won't see or hear anything from the Democratic side.

They'll put LIEberman on to pretend to be bi-partisan, but only if he is supporting the Repig filibuster.

When it comes to who controls the media, NOTHING HAS CHANGED

13. That's risky IMO
It would make it really easy for hardcore conservatives to get their agenda through next time the tables turn and the control the legislative and executive branches. I guess they'd quickly be held accountable by voters though if their policies then didn't work out.

17. Actually I disagree.
Nuclear option is the best way to get through the Republican obstructions. We can revoke the nuclear option as we see fit. And that'll be when the economy is booming and jobs are WAY up in the United states, and the Corporation has completely lost its coveted corporate personhood, Fairness Doctrine re-enacted; Rush Limbaugh arrested and indicted for pedastry, and so much more.

20. Revoking it when the economy recovered would be smart
I like that plan. Right now, it would signal that Dems don't want to cooperate with Reps, or at least would be spun that way. We should first give it some more time to try to get bills to pass without changing any fillibuster rules.

They will look so small and petty.

Please, please, please let them filibuster. They'll look like obstructionist fools.
