The Stimulus Bill is the Immigration Bill All Over Again
By: Ian Welsh Monday January 26, 2009 3:20 pm

Anyone remember the immigration bill? The one which increased the number of guest workers and had draconian rules for becoming a citizen that included having to go back to the country of origin? The one that conservatives hated and liberals were lukewarm about?

Insiders are trying to get some sort of popular enthusiasm going, but really, even most people who support it think "it's better than nothing. But it's not very good". All the enthusiasm and energy, for killing it, is on the right. On the left, a palpable yawn.

Unlike the immigration bill, it'll probably pass, only because there are a lot more Democrats in Congress now. Putting out a bill liberals and progressives can't be enthusiastic about left Obama without a left wing that's fired up to push it, with few surrogates to push back against Republican propaganda, and a bill which will be much less effective economically than it should be.

Which means, in the end, the right may get what they want: a bill so compromised it doesn't turn the economy around, leading to electoral gains in 2010 and 2012.

And the irony is, it'll probably pass with as bare a vote margin as if it had been a more effective, more liberal, bill.

1. Fuck the Republicans.
I'd love to see the Dems do a 100% liberal stimulus. No fucking tax cuts. In fact, all the tax cuts for the wealthy need to be reversed and on top of that, tax those fuckers more. Over 40,000 people lost their jobs today. I say we've had enough of listening to the shit coming from the very people responsible for this mess.

2. And this Ian Welsh person is a pre-eminent authority on economics, and
has ESP as of what date?

One of his columns during the General Election....

Folks act as if negative campaigning doesn't work, but this is a myth. It works, and it works well. All it is is reverse branding -- branding your opponent for him. Schmidt will be looking for the opportunity to brand Obama as effete, weak and unprincipled. Obama's actions of the past couple weeks, his "run to the center" in which he has suddenly realized he didn't mean what he said in the primaries is playing into this narrative.

As with almost all Democrats Obama doesn't seem to get that strength isn't about what you vote for (national "security"), it's about how you act. Stand strong on a principle and people will admire that even if they disagree with it. Be seen to flip like a weathervane and even if people wind up agreeing with you, they'll despise you. Being strong, appearing strong, is about having principles, about taking a stand, not about talking tough.

One of his columns towards the end of the primaries:

Obama has his work cut out for him. The possibility that a lot of Hillary's white working class base could turn to McCain or stay home should be a real worry for him. There's been a great deal of bitterness and anger on both sides of the fight. And, to be crass and point out the unpalatable truth, there isn't a lot in it for Hillary to back Obama in a more than pro-forma "going through the motions" fashion. If he loses, she's the presumptive nominee in 4 years, after all. If he wins, she probably has to wait 8 years, and she's not getting any younger. If she really wants to be president, well, Obama's still in the way. Now I'm not saying she won't help Obama even if such thoughts are going through her mind, no doubt she understands what another 4 years of a Republican presidency would mean. Still, there's help, and there's going all out. And there's a lot of space between the two.
