"Prayers for Bobby" is on again tonight. For those wanting some insight on being gay.
It's about a very devoutly religious mother who could not come to terms about her young son coming out as gay.
He committed suicide.
Based on a true story. She eventually came to terms and became an an activist for gay rights.
I don't mean to be a pest about it, but it IS a very powerful movie. And gives a lot of insight about how so very hard and scary it is to "come out" as gay.
3. Saw it the other night, wish it had been done better.
The message is fine but the presentation was horrible...full of stereotypes. Like when he would put his hand on the hip in an all too-obvious gesture for the movie, it didn't look at all natural or real and the discussion on old testament verses was WAY too shallow! It was one of the more important elements of the movie but was treated almost as an afterthought and didn't come off as very convincing. Should have been done more like the president in West Wing did a few years ago. (Yes I am a gay man of some 65 years...I'm glad the movie was made, just not all that happy with the production...) oh well...
9. I got the point, I just thought it could have been presented better
but then few things in this world pass my perfection test! haha...(I am kidding) Please believe me when I tell you I absolutely empathize with the kid in that movie. I have had no less than TWO friends commit suicide for the same reason. Lucky for me, I've always been well grounded and that kind of out never was one of my considered options.
8. Thanks. I'm probably overcritical, it's just that I think I could have directed it a little better
based on my 6 decades of observing how glbt people have been treated. But getting people to at least discuss is a plus I think. When I was a kid it wasn't ever mentioned...I have at least 3 gay friends (that I now know of) who bowed to social norms 40 or so years ago, married and had children out of 'duty' and later came out and admitted they had lived lies for all that time. I think that's really sad. \
4. After watching this movie, I am thankful that my Southern Baptist Grandma
wasn't like that on her gay son. She loved him and looked another way instead, never came down hard on him even though she was an active Christian woman. That was my Uncle Charles. He was amazing. He passed away last May at age of 73.
This movie sends a powerful message and is very good. I am watching it again tonight. This time Mom is going to watch it.
