My husband's work place is forcing him to go in.
My husband and I live in Western PA. We are in the middle of Winter Storm Warning. The Roads are already bad.

He tried taking one of the Personal days off earlier today but the Manager insisted he come in saying they would let him have a room if it was too bad to drive home. But she wasn't going to allow him to take a personal day.

He tried leaving out of town around 7:45-8:00 He got 10 miles from our home and slid twice nearly losing complete control of the car and crashing. He called the Assistant Manager and told her she needed to get the someone else to do his shift tonight because he almost crashed . She's demanded that he come in.

What do I do? I'm scared my husband is going to die and I want to kill his manager and assistant manager.

Please I know I am not a member of this board but can anyone tell me anything to do? My husband is out on the road now.

1. Well, not to sound harsh
But we had -30 last week and I was expected to be at work. We have had lots of snow and ice as well. And yet my boss expected me at work. And I went. Weather happens. Deal with it.

91. No, being told "Weather happens. Deal with it. " is rude. Esp when OP said he'd already slid around
on the roads. THAT is what is rude. Being told "Weather happens. Deal with it. " when she is concerned about the life of her husband, THAT is rude.

"Being expected to do your job is the rudest" is rather a straw man. Try again.

And you, in Atlanta, do you really think you have a right to make fun of someone who is having snowy and icy roads? Good grief.

72. I worked as a temp at a job where people got paid for icy days
So one icy day, a bunch of them didn't show up and my supervisor was "why are you here, don't you live out of town?" It was snowing or snowed, but was not that big a deal getting in. Another time we had a big ice storm and I called in (at a place where we had five 'sick' days that could be used for any reason) on the first day, but went in the 2nd day when the ice was mostly cleared. Most of the rest of my team, took both days off. It depends on the situation, but some people clearly milk those days off in my experience.

From what I have heard though, this situation in Pa sounds bad. I had another time where I had to drive home in an almost total whiteout, going about 20 mph when I could barely see my hood ornament, but I think ice would be worse.

8. Ice is slicker some places
I never had a problem driving on ice in Montana, it was dry and crunchy. The biggest fear was a breakdown and freezing to death.

Driving on ice here in Oregon is like driving on vaseline. Totally different experience. In that situation, I can understand the fear completely.

when Mr 'pede asks just why did we move from Florida to Amarillo?
Back here for me (57 to 66, or 70 if you count time served in Lubbock) first time for him although he grew up in Connecticut
And yes, I have heard his stories about having to go to work on snowshoes in CT
But 34 yrs in FL spoiled him something awful and my 30 yrs there got me used to warmer winters too

You and your hubby be careful out there, ok:hi:

12. I'm sorry but any workplace that can't understand and compassion with
it's employees about stuff like this is a place I do not give my business to. In my mind Lives are more important than money. He tried to give them reasonable time to get someone in the first time he tried to call off.

He lives the 40 mins from the work place where as everyone else lives in that town. I don't think it is unreasonable to understand the danger my husband is putting himself in respect the man when he needs some understanding.

But I'm not stupid enough to go out in it when I don't have to.

Pragmatic is waiting for the storm to pass.

Unless you are essential personnel, you wait in a safe place.

If you're essential personnel, you have the equipment to deal with it.

89. I think there is a pretty huge difference between driving on treated roads in some snow
and escaping a metal island during a hurricane. Let me put it this way, if a tornado was sitting in the middle of the road, he'd have a good excuse to miss work.

109. Who said the roads had been treated?
That takes time. Sometimes, as when there is a whole lotta snow in a short time, it takes a lot of time. Also, Western Pa. where the OP said she was (I think) is mountain country. Those roads are scary when they're dry!

Here in NE Ohio we had a foot of snow in a day's time. The snow stopped around 4pm. At 11pm, they are still not all cleared.

Driving icy roads in a blizzard is dangerous.

Is the job worth dying for? In this case she was very concerned and being told "deal with it" was rude, as that poster said below also.

Just because someone grew up in snowy land, or lives in snowy land, does not mean they know what a specific situation is. How about simply saying "hope he gets wherever safely"?

105. There is no stupid job on earth that is worth the life or limb
of an employee. Period. I don't care what it is. And I've found that the less important the job is (retail, useless-gidget factory, etc.), the worse managers are about people not being able to make it in.

I dealt with a boss like that once. She claimed that if she could make it in, anyone could, and anyone who didn't would be disciplined. Never mind that she lived less than ten miles from her house, while many of us, including me, lived thirty or more miles away. And never mind that the world wouldn't end if one or more of us didn't come in for a day and it wasn't worth our life, injury or a totaled car. One of my co-workers was in a bad accident once as a result of our fucking bitch of a manager's demands that she come in or face severe discipline. She said that she should send all of her medical and repair bills to the manager and the company bigshots.

46. Are you a manager??
Filling in for staff?? I managed in a couple of "failed" companies that thought of management in that fashion. Most managers work 60+hours a week. If someone feels that they are in danger(and could put others in danger as well) by driving to work in severe weather conditions, they should not not be forced to. When most ice storms hit, the people are told to stay off of the roads unless it is an emergency anyhow.

6. I am not sure what you can do, but I'll kick this thread to keep you company.
If the situation is that he has to put his life on the line to drive in, then he shouldn't go. You can't control his behavior you can only tell him that you love him and that if he returns home immediately then the two of you will deal with the consequences of his choice together. If he was in a union then he would know who could help him. You might think of contacting your Congressmember tomorrow to ask about lawyers who deal with labor issues. Your husband might think of starting up a union at his workplace to deal with situations like this in future.

I'll meditate on your husband's safety and your peace of mind.

37. THANK YOU ALL. His workplace call us back and said that the
other guy is coming in. The assistant Manager was like. "Yeah, it is getting bad here". and the tone in her voice was like I didn't believe him before I do now. so I'll be kind.

we have a pre-paid cell phones because we don't want to deal with contracts but are minutes are low now.

I did get a hold of him he is coming back. Thank you for keeping me company. I can only hope he is safe between where he is and home.

53. Oh, good news!!!
The whole idea of, "get to work or else!" just doesn't make sense to me. I can understand if you're an emergency worker... police, fire, paramedic... but the rest of the world?

Years ago, a bad storm was bearing down on our city and the mayor and officials were encouraging employers to close down and send employees home. Our employer (a small publishing company!) thought it was all overkill. I just chose to go home. The boss wasn't happy, but I still had a job.

I'm glad your sweetie is headed home. Please be sure to let us know when he's safe and sound!

38. This is a perfect example of why I'm so glad Pres. Obama signed
that Employee Freedom of Choice Act. That is just callous and stupid. All they care about is that almighty bottom line.
UNIONS, UNIONS, UNIONS!!! Solidarity forever!

48. Unions!
But we Union people still have to go to work when we are supposed to. I am a VP of a local Union, so do not preach to me about how it's all supposed to work.
I am also glad that President Obama signed the employee free choice act into law as well, but Unions still do not make the rules and if people don't go to work, Unions are useless anyway.

jeopardy so the COMPANY CAN KEEP IT'S DOORS OPEN!! I'm not 'preaching' to you and couldn't give a rat's ass what position you hold in your shop! If a worker HAS THE TIME (vacation, sick or whatever)THEY HAVE THAT RIGHT!

55. Maybe I did over react a little but I should put some background in here.
First we live in Western PA close about 30 minutes from I 80 and the ice here is very slick and causes a lot of problems.

Also the man reason why I am having a nervous breakdown is that last year when we had a bad storm he spun out on 79 and total his car. He escaped with no injuries BUT if anyone else had been in the car with him or he spun the other way they or he could have been seriously hurt.

56. Please post when you hear from him, so we know he's OK.
And if this happens again, and his jackass boss insists he comes in, figure out a way to make the car temporarily "inoperable."

Examples:
His wife left the lights on, and the battery is dead.
His wife dropped the keys in the snow, while walking the dog, and can't find it.
His wife broke the windshield wiper, trying to operate it while it was frozen.

And here's one that's not your fault ... :D
A huge branch snapped off, due to the weight of the ice, in your driveway, and it's too heavy to move without a chainsaw and help from the neighbors.

Seriously, let us know when you hear from him.

66. During the Blizzard of 78' I had to go to work...
...At Ryder truck rental. I was working shifts at the maintenance desk and we had over 100 leased tractor trailers stranded across the length of the state and spent three days running our service trucks up and down I95 ferrying drums of diesel fuel so our drivers would have heat. Everyone was on 12 hour shifts, but here's the deal...we also transported our people to and from work with our four wheel drives...

And I'll guarantee the maintenance Dept at the hotel has one or more for plowing. And that should be the suggestion for the next storm...if they need the people that badly, then they should be willing to risk their vehicle and insurance to make it happen.

who have extended a supportive and compassionate hand to Mrs. redirish, which is all anyone can do in this situation. I can feel the empathy in your remarks.

For those who chose to respond with flippant remarks, what possible purpose is served? Save it for another time and place. The weather is terrible here in southern Ohio with snow emergencies being called all over the place and threats of power outages. It must be really scarey, north of here, where Mrs. redirish is located.

For you, redirish, I hope your husband has made it to his destination. If so, perhaps he should just stay put for the present, even past his shift, until the weather moderates some. You are in our thoughts.

on edit> I see that he made it home! Thank goodness! All the best to you both.

My friend in the southern Ohio area is hearing rumors that some stops are no travel zones. If you are caught driving you will get a ticket. Now this is people talking to each other no official word but I was wondering if you heard that?

Thanks for the support.

100. You can't imagine!! Just logging on this a.m. ....
Level 3 snow emergency today (you can get cited if you're on the road without good reason). Surprisingly a lot of traffic on the interstates.

The "cut-in-the-hill" in northern KY (your friend can explain that to you. It's problematic even in the best weather), it looks like that slide puzzle called Rush Hour or Traffic Jam where you have to slide all these cars and trucks around on the board to get one car out, it's just a mass of 18 wheelers going nowhere.

The cameras mounted over our expressways just showed on TV where one guy came down a hill and got stuck on the ice at the bottom. Traffic continued on by, barely missing him, and eventually one guy couldn't merge and rear-ended him. Then these two guys GOT OUT OF THEIR CARS to inspect the damage while other vehicles just missed crushing them between the two cars. I thought I was going to see someone die!

I just finished gathering all my outdated ingredients I've been saving for just this reason and baked some corn bread for the birds. Glad my stove is still operative. Lots of power outages.

Going out to take pictures. Hope you stay warm and safe!

101. You take care and keep safe as well. Just a side note. Hubby's
Manager called today and made arranagement for someone to work for him tonight. His workplace got slammed with half the snow we got here this afternoon and as quickly as we got slammed. The guy working for my husband only lives 2 minutes from the hotel + the city the hotel is in has more plows and salt supply. The inside story is that the town we live in is almost out of salt for the year and we saw a plow truck 1 time two hours after we got the additional 3.5 inches ontop of the ice.

"My husband and I live in Western PA."

Yep....that's it right there. Now that your husband is home, move the hell out of there the first chance you get.

I lived in Western PA for about 2 years. It sucks there... the roads are horrible and the Ice that gets laid down on these roads, especially near the rivers, is deadly.

107. I would love to know the hotel, but don't say!
I wouldn't want to get him in trouble. But I for one wouldn't want to stay there after hearing this. If the company really needs him to come in (unlike other places where he may not be as essential), then they should hire a plow truck or something to come and get him. But they don't have to do anything, you just figure it out. I know, a repug would call me a communist for caring more about human life than money and work. In this bad economic climate, we all have the fear of God in us - employers have all the power.

I'm disgusted because believe me I am in the same situation as your husband, as my company, a large corp., will not allow people to take days off for bad weather and road conditions, and I could easily do my work from home. We are told to make sure to (ironically) stay in one of the nearby hotels because if we don't make it to work on time the next day, it is our fault for not foreseeing this.
