The lesson is right in front of us (or behind us, I hope). The crimes of the Bush admin can be traced directly to the Nixon admin, and if Ford had not pardoned Nixon and his cronies, both Rummy and Cheney (and others) would probably have spent most of the 80's in jail insteaad of burrowing into the Republican power structure.

Those appearing before hearings can't get much, if anything, past him. His intelligence, background, expertise and passion for the truth is a tremendous asset for all of us.

I enjoy listening to him on the Senate floor and most especially during the various hearings he has sat on. I like his common sense approach.

Thank you, Rhode Island for voting this decent man into the Senate, and thank you Senator Whitehouse for standing up for all of us.

If we don't take issue with past abuses they will repeat themselves far worse than the worse we have already endured. Doing nothing makes all of us accessories after the fact(s), gives those abuses credibility, and awards a license to further abuse and push our Constitution to a crisis perhaps beyond repair.

Congress makes the law. The president only enforces them. A "policy difference" that contravenes an act of Congress is a crime. If we exempt executive officials from the criminal law, then there is no law and we live in a dictatorship.

Here's what I wrote to him:

Flowers at your feet, Mr. Whitehouse,for acknowledging our need to address the crimes of the Bush administration.

We the People have been like children, molested, metaphorically, by those in power who care not what their actions may do to our collective psyche.

Obama does not unilaterally have the right to simply move on, ignoring what has gone before. And let us not ignore the mote in our own eye and leave it to the international community to take the remedial and punitive action we oursevles should be taking.

And, Mr. Whitehouse ... Whitehouse in the White House, 'ere long? It's a thought to savor.

From Santa Fe, a plea that you will not waver in your intentions to stand up for our national honor.

would play this short speech every night at 8 o'clock for 2 weeks straight. Make it all but unavoidable for every American to hear it. Everyone should hear it and right now is the time to hear it.

He said everything that needs to be said, he's precisely right, and anyone with ears can understand the message. If we don't have accountability this time, we'll be guaranteeing even more egregious abuses of power in the future. The previous administration didn't reject suggestions or ignore customs, they broke the law, and laws without consequence or enforcement are utterly meaningless.
