Sheriff's Office to transport inmates via light rail (Sheriff Joe Arpaio)
Edited on Wed Jan-28-09 09:16 AM by Coventina
This is probably too local to post in LBN, but I was so outraged, I had to post it somewhere....

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio unveiled a plan Tuesday to avoid airport parking fees by transporting inmates on the Metro light rail, but officials claim that parking is already free.

Arpaio said he planned to transport extradited inmates using the light rail from 44th and Washington streets to the Fourth Avenue Jail in order to eliminate parking fees at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. MCSO estimates that the new system can save about $72,000 in transport fees.

Arpaio said free parking offered to law enforcement agencies was revoked several years ago and MCSO has been paying $25 per day for each car parked at the airport. Sky Harbor officials said Tuesday that all state law enforcement agencies have access to free and secure parking as long as they notify the Airport Police Bureau in advance.

“Law enforcement officers park in a secure location at the airport and the officer and their prisoners are transported by Phoenix Police to their airline gate,” Deborah Ostreicher, Deputy Aviation Director for Sky Harbor, said in an e-mail. “The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office currently (uses) this service.”

Another reporter did the math, and in order to rack up $72,000 in transport fees, there would have to be 3 prisoner transfers per hour, which is obviously not the case.

When will we be free of this lunatic?!?!?!?

1. When people get their heads out of their asses and realize that none of
his tactics have made any difference in crime rates or saved them one dime in taxes. Or he drops dead.

2. You'll Never Be Free of Arpaio
As long as the voters of Maricopa County keep re-electing the lunatic, you're stuck with him.

But then this would make the voters that keep supporting him, lunatics who think sadism is a law enforcement tool. In Pima county Dupnik was bad enough, but compared to Arpaio, the man's a saint.

4. Reply from Valley Metro
Sheriff’s Plan Causes Concerns

For Immediate Release

January 28, 2009

PHOENIX — Since yesterday’s announcement by the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office to transport inmates on light rail, METRO has received passenger feedback expressing concern for their personal and family safety.

METRO’s goal is to provide a safe, secure and reliable journey for its passengers. Any situation that creates concern for passengers and discourages ridership is of great concern to METRO.

The METRO light rail vehicle, much like any public transit vehicle, is not a controlled environment and not designed for this application. Transporting inmates using public transportation is not a common practice nationally and has not occurred locally on the Valley’s bus system.

It is anticipated that the METRO Board of Directors will consider a resolution requesting the Sheriff’s Office to reconsider this proposal in light of concerns expressed by Valley residents. METRO would welcome an opportunity to discuss with the Sheriff’s Office better solutions that meet everyone’s needs.

6. Yeah, there's fear, but I think sometimes the compulsion to Crush the Inferior is stronger than fear
Or else they'd be crying bloody murder about some of that psycho's policies.

8. Arpaio is an attention whore.
And, as in many semi-rural areas, the lowest common denominator will keep him in office.
