The Myth: Republicans in the Congress stick together and Dems
are wimps or collaborators. Just an example: In 2001 Ashcroft passed through committee on a party line vote. All dems on the committee voted against him, despite the tradition of Senatorial courtesy toward their peers. Contrast this with Holder- only two repukes on the committee voted against him. In the full Senate on the Ashcroft appointment, only a couple of dems voted for him. I'll bet that considerably more repukes than that vote for holder.

I'd like to note that dems folded plenty over the last few years, but on the whole, they actually stand up against repukes more than repukes stand up against dems.

1. That is a comforting thought.
Dems are going to have to do a lot more of standing up these next few years to get things turned around.

2. that is true for that example. But still I think the dems have more diversity of opinion that the
GOP which is why on ocassion we don't always stick together.

more diversity of opinion, and often expressed.

3. I think you are right
BUT I think that Republicans choose their battles a little more strategically than our side does.

5. If you image a bell curve with center / center right in the middle - Republicans showed
Edited on Wed Jan-28-09 12:53 PM by higher class
BY VOTE that they are all huddled together over on the right and some like Devine are way over at the extreme end of right.

Dems are more scattered.

The pboblems of the first eight years of the 21st Century is that way too many Dems parked themeelves to the right of center and never or rarely budged. THEY with a pressured Rebouclican Contgress voted over and over AGAINST OUR COUNTRY AND AGAINST ITS CITIZENS TO IMPROVE the POCKETS of rich people and corporations, help corporations avoid expenses, and to take away our rights and treaties.

The same problem exists - potentially.

6. It is just that our tent is a lot bigger
so, generally speaking, the cat-herding is more of a challenge.

8. Like todays vote on Stimulis Bill for instance
Every single Republican plus twelve Democrats voted against it. Not one single Republican voted for it..

9. My problems arise out of the lack of push back against lawless rule
and in some cases, aiding in bad laws clearly unConstitutional. That produced a certain lack of confidence on the part of some of us. There wasn't any adequate excuses for it argumentatively. They may have held something over their heads. Otherwise, they did some good and were ok procedurely.
