Prop. 8 donors to ask court for anonymity
January 28th, 2009, 12:13 pm · 74 Comments · posted by Martin Wisckol, Politics reporter

Citing prevous death threats and harassment, backers of the Proposition 8 ban on gay marriage will ask a federal court Thursday to exempt the measure’s campaign contributors from further public disclosure.

A semi-annual disclosure filing is due Saturday, as part of the state campaign finance law to ensure that voters can know who is backing all candidates and ballot measures. The upcoming filing will include contributions over $100 made since the Nov. 4 ballot measure was approved.

A 1982 U.S. Supreme Court ruling found that disclosure exemptions could be permitted by the courts if the plaintiffs demonstrated a “reasonable probability” that those identified would be subjected to “threats, harassment, or reprisals.”

“There has been a systematic attempt to intimidate, threaten and harass donors to the Prop. 8 campaign,” said Ron Prentice, who helped lead the campaign. The lawsuit sites specific death threats received by previously disclosed donors, vandalism to private property, and white powder – eventually determined to be harmless – sent to two Mormon churches.

5. Jesus doesn't approve of their judgment and I hope they will be told they can't take away people's
rights and THINK they can be cloaked in secrecy for aiding that removal of rights!

Sick people... they all need outed.

2. I hope they lose.
If you're willing to donate money to a political cause, you should have the backbone to face criticism for your decision.

4. What was that the Right wingers always used to say about
the end of habeaus and the "Patriot" Act? If you have done nothing wrong, you have nothing to be afraid of.
Stand up and be proud of your hate. Let everyone know that you put your money where your hate is!

12. I'm sure that most of them thought that their bigotry would never
be exposed, that sending a check to support such hatred was like sending in a check for your phone bill, ie: private.

But this is politics, and it isn't private. And this is the internet age. Obviously, these knuckle draggers haven't heard that public records are all just a click away these days. You fund it, you'll be found out.

Now they get to have their co-workers, neighbors, friends and relatives confronting them about their bigotry. It couldn't happen to a sleazier bunch of knuckle draggers.

6. Better not.
Bad precedent. Anyone know what the 1982 SCOTUS ruling had to do with?

7. We don't need no stinking disclosure to know who supported Prop 8.
Seriously, how many death threats did they really receive?

Most likely, they would consider just receiving harmless email or mail as a threat.

8. How sad for them
Now I want to know who they are even more.
It's for their own good. I mean I wouldn't want to profane their good stores with my evil secular money.

10. Um, yes, people get upset when you work to deny them ordinary human rights.
I imagine they'll be even more upset when you do it secretly.

I've always wanted to use this smiley, so here's to you Ron Prentice:

:nopity:
