Bernie Marcus quoted on Democracy Now
Edited on Thu Jan-29-09 12:05 AM by roody
Bernie Marcus: ”To pay for the programs that they’re going to put in, they’re going to have to get the money somewhere. And the unions will go after anybody who works for a living and makes a living. There’s no question about it, that Joe the Plumber, whatever the hell he does for a living, is going to pay for this in the future, along with everybody else. Corporate taxes will go up along with everything else. And this is the demise of a civilization. This is how a civilization disappears. I’m sitting here as an elder statesman, and I’m watching this happen, and I don’t believe it."

1. When you run a huge company into the ground and don't get sued
or have to pay back the millions they paid you, you can don the title "elder statesman."

It isn't a coveted group, I think they have lunch at Carly Fiorina's house the first Tuesday of each month.

2. It seems Mr Marcus repeats himself. . .
Last October, while campaigning for Republican Senators who could help block passage of the Employee Free Choice Act, Marcus participated in an hour long conference call urging donors to fight the legislation, which he framed as "an existential threat to American capitalism."

"This is the demise of a civilization," said Marcus during the appeal. "This is how a civilization disappears. I am sitting here as an elder statesman and I'm watching this happen and I don't believe it."

Yes, it seems Mr Marcus has found a serve-all comment he can use to attack the Republican cause du jour.
