DU'ers: Beware that "I.Q. Quiz" posted as an Ad here and around the Internet sites..
it contains a virus. I had to deal with it last week and with help from DU'ers got rid of it...but it just popped up here on DU when I switched Forums. Read carefully before you try to get out of "taking the Quiz" because it traps you. If you try to "X" out or hit "cancel" it immediately tries to infect your computer. If you use Firefox, like me just EXIT Firefox and don't touch anything on that "I.Q. Quiz."

I got help here with a "malware program" that scrubbed it off my computer but it just tried to get me to "X" out of it again..and that's how I got it in the first place. You don't want to touch anything when it pops up. Just get out of your browser...because if you do anything it will infect your computer.

4. You don't have to click on it....it just Pops Up...and you think you can X out
or hit Cancel...but it doesn't let you. I use AVG, SpyBot, Adaware...and Firefox and none of them stopped the "Pop Up." I got rid of it...but it seems to come from here that it just popped up and took over screen. It was an ad here. I don't usually get DU Ads because I pay to support the site...but this one apparently is there...before you log in with your password it seems to lurk.

Anyway. DU'ers helped me get rid of it...it's still out there here and I don't want to alarm anyone..but somehow the stuff I have doesn't BLOCK it...and you the only way to "deny it" is to log out of your browser and come back on, fresh.

I know some might think I'm "woo woo" posting this...but I'm not one who goes crazy over the latest e-mail about "terrible virus" scares that my friends send me all the time. I had a personal experience with this POS thing (Malware)...is what some computer savvy DU'ers told me. Whatever I have doesn't stop it and I know lots of DU'ers like myself use "feeware" and Firefox. Somehow this damned thing is getting through as a "Pop Up" where you don't even have to click on it to have it infect the computer ...you get infected by trying to get out of it. That's why I say...DO NOT TOUCH IT ...EVEN TO GET OUT. Just get out of your Browser and log back on to stop it.

6. If you ever get yourself into a site that is trapping you
Like with a popup box that only says OK, etc, or is spawning tons of popups, best way to exit is to force close the *process* of your browser, rather than a single program instance. Right click taskbar and open task manager, then go to the processes tab, and end firefox.exe or iexplore.exe to close all its windows without letting them do anything.

12. It can't be worse than the "Washington Watch" ad on the left side of the Latest/Greatest page
That flash animation is SOOOOOOO annoying. I've probably seen it in my periphery about 20,000 times.

15. Thanks for the heads up.
Firefox has been a good browser, over IE, but has become more vulnerable with popularity. One bad malware, or as another DUer refers to it, shillware (dontcha love it?) can monopolize a computer system for weeks, especially if you maintain your own (without the help of professionals).

HijackThis has saved my system more than once with shillware that targets the registry, and not picked up by spybot or adaware. If you have the need for drastic measures, HijackThis is a good option, but is not recommended without supervision. SWI forums, for spyware removal, offers free help from an amazing volunteer staff of professionals. (by some of the chat I've read, I expect most of them are dems too!)

They will read your HijackThis generated log and take you through the clean up, one step at a time. It might take a few days before they can get to you, but once they do, they will not stop until your problem is solved. They saved me so much time and money a few years ago that I actually donated some pretty serious (for me) money to them. They are worth it.

17. This is what DU'ers gave me that worked to get rid of it...
I have home computer and am not that tech savvy but this one was easy to download (free)(Malwarebytes) and my computer was so messed up I thought I'd have to hire someone. I had popups going all over the place and the more I "x'd" out the more popped up. I managed to get it downloaded...and although the complete scan took 40 minutes to do my whole computer the stuff that had seized it started to disappear after the first ten minutes. The malware actually took over my AVG, copied the logo and colors and was sending me Security Alerts disguised as from "AVG" warning me. It placed itself as a "Security Alert" icon next to my AVG and kept flashing and sending me signals. That "I.Q." test kept popping up all over at the same time.

It was nasty and I've never had anything like that happen before... Here's the link in case anyone else has a problem and wants an easy to use freeware. I was skeptical of downloading it by C-Net and DU'ers who seemed trustworthy recommended it as easy to use. I'm not techie enough to be able to go through my resistry and all that stuff and remove by hand.

Thanks for your link...I'll bookmark it.

20. Shouldn't the company supplying that Ad be charged with a crime?
Edited on Fri Jan-30-09 11:58 AM by file83
Pretty sure they are violating the law, so, where are the police or FBI?

This shit won't stop until we start arresting the people who do this and putting them away.
