Did anyone watch the Ted Haggard HBO documentary? I felt bad for him.
I used to mock him but I was really moved by his plight. He and his family have really been struggling.

2. I didn't watch but
why do you feel bad for him? He is a hypocrite and a liar; he chose the path he's taken and while I feel sorry for his family, he deserves no sympathy.

3. I have more sympathy for gays who have been driven to suicide, civilians killed by the Bush
cabal, and whistleblowers whose lives and careers were attacked by rethugs over the past decade.

Understand where you are coming from, but it is important to keep in perspective.

6. I didn't watch it..

Would it be okay then?

8. The difference is he joined in the power structure that causes these suicides.
Edited on Thu Jan-29-09 09:50 PM by Hissyspit
Used that power structure to empower himself, at the expense of the truth and others.

I didn't say you should not have sympathy. I said to keep it in perspective. But I think he is a con artist.

13. Strangely Haggard is starting to fit that profile.
I watched him yesterday on Oprah. All he has left is his family and I have to give him
kudos for having raised a couple of very sensitive kids. his problem in my opinion,
his wife.

While he's an extreme hypocrite, he's also naive and needs to let go of that sham of a marriage
and find a nice christian guy. Maybe then there's some hope for a happy ever after.

5. Did you know he's in the documentary Jesus Camp? His hostility toward the
kid preacher is almost palpable and he ends his interview by gloating over being a mega-church pastor, "...It's a fabulous life!"

9. Well, I guess his PR tactic worked
I don't feel sorry for him. And he obviously still doesn't get it.

He's quickly discovered that he's not qualified to do anything but scam the religious community to make a living.

10. What is his plight? That he's refusing to admit he's gay?
I'm honestly asking nicely because, no, I haven't seen it.

11. Don't feel bad
This is a man who started his own church. Think about that. He simply started his own moneymaking machine, and it was built on the principles of demonizing those who weren't exactly like him.

Except there were more out there who were like him than he cared to admit.

He made his fortune and lived high on the hog preaching divisiveness and intolerance.

And then, as my old Italian grandmother used to say, "You spit up in the air and it lands in your face."

I feel for his kids, who are really innocents in all of this. His wife is nothing but a co-conspirator and enabler, so I guess she's pissed that her fat free ride is over. She knew all along what was up, that's what I think after watching them on "Oprah" (the only time I've seen that show, and I swear: NEVER AGAIN!), listening to her rationalizing and lies.

He's led a dishonest life and now he is, in the words of the Bible, reaping what he has sown.

I couldn't be less moved, he's still being dishonest with himself, he just replaced the lie.

20. As someone
Edited on Fri Jan-30-09 03:06 AM by QueenOfCalifornia
who has not seen the HBO documentary I can't comment on it -- BUT

I can comment on his whole agenda of fucking over anyone gay. Anyone who looks at the planet and says that global warming is not going to destroy the plant, anyone who does not buy into his theocratical BS and like me, decides to think for themselves....

I have the movie Jesus Camp. It is the nail in Haggard's coffin... sue me but that guy is a fucking asshole who should step out of the closet and beg for forgiveness from every single gay/lesbian person whom he has condemned to his "Hell."

When he brings his family on Larry King Live and he has his son talking about how great a dad he is and theres stuff like "Ted Haggard bought crystal meth from male prostitute" scrolling across the screen.

22. Ted is suffering now only because HE has become the abomination.
He rode pretty high on the hog by calling others the abomination. He got bit by his own political machine. So what? Shed a tear because someone who fights dogs got bit by his animal? I think it serves him right for supporting it in the first place.

23. Nope
But how can you feel bad for someone who takes radical and consistent actions to persecute people who are just like him? He deserves the treatment he advocated for other gays. His pain will never be enough to erase his hypocrisy.
