Judd Gregg for Commerce Sec = 60 dems in the Senate?
NH's governor is a democrat. Would he appoint a dem to the Senate should President Obama appoint Gregg to Commerce? I don't know, but I'd sure love to see a filibuster proof majority in the Senate.

1. He'd probably appoint a Dem, sure
It's his right to do so. Whether that Dem could win or not in the next election might be a different story, but that's just how it goes. It'll be interesting to see how this all unfolds.

2. He's got a couple great choices
I think Paul Hodes would be an excellent Senator. There's also Carol Shea Porter, but I'd rather see Hodes.

Wow. 60 votes.

3. Assuming Gregg is tapped.... few questions...
Will he accept knowing his departure from the Senate could result in a 60 seat Dem majority?

Would the NH repubs pressure NH governor to fill the seat with another repub? What kind of bluster will erupt?

Gregg would have to go through a confirmation process - would the repubs scuttle his nomination for the purpose of keeping him in the senate thus preventing a 60 seat Dem majority?

4. I suspect he'd accept
Yes, the NH pukesters would lobby big time for another pukester to be appointed in Gregg's stead. And they might succeed.
No, I don't think the repubs would scuttle his appointment.

5. NH is trending more and more Democratic as time goes on
Perhaps Gregg would take this position instead of facing defeat in his next reelection campaign?

6. Bingo.
My feeling is he's past his Senate shelf life, even with the NH Repubs. Although I'd prefer to have him freezing in tar paper shack in the Sandwich Notch rather than hold any position in gov't, Commerce is a fairly meh place to park him until after the 2010 elections, then drop him.

Lynch would appoint a Dem in his place; the Gov ain't suicidal.

7. Da Juddhead - it's a Granite State of Mind
Edited on Fri Jan-30-09 07:18 AM by SpiralHawk
Da Juddhead is not well appreciated for having evicted a sickly widow from her home.

But he did it -- Republiconism in action...

Just the kind of arrogance and cruel indifference that Commerce needs? I don't think so...
