Kids Put In 'Holding Tank' When Teacher Out
Budget Cuts Slash Money For Substitute Teachers
DeLAND, Fla. -- Students at a Central Florida high school are being forced to sit in a gymnasium -- with no heat or air conditioning -- if their teacher is absent because budget cuts have slashed money to pay substitutes, the Orlando Sentinel reported.
Budget cuts in Volusia County have forced officials at DeLand High School to often use the gym as a "holding tank," the school's principal told the newspaper.
The students are told to sit on the bleachers in the gym and to talk quietly and behave, the report said. The principal said he realizes that the situation provides no benefit to the students.
The school board may ask the teachers union to let them use teachers to cover other classes during their planning hours.
