Menu Foods' Director was Director of Safety-Kleen Corp when it was sued for violations.
Edited on Sat Mar-24-07 10:37 PM by AZBlue
The director of Menu Foods Inc., (the company that makes the pet food that is killing your pets) Robert W. Luba, was the director of Safety-Kleen Corp. (the nation’s largest hazardous waste operator) when that company filled for bankruptcy in a June 2000. It was discovered that there were “problems” with the way the “top officers reported financial information internally and to shareholders.” Safety-Kleen settled with investors for $284 million.

It looks like Robert W. Luba left Safety Kleen bankrupt (owing investors $1.6 billion) and tones of hazardous waste strewn about for citizens and state governments to contend with.

This is the guy feeding our beloved pets.

From here: http://lethaldose.wordpress.com/2007/03/21/what-is-this-guy-up-to-he-spent-years-ruining-americans-health-now-he-is-targeting-our-pets/

And here are some of Safety-Kleen's violations under Robert W. Luba:
- Exceeding the permitted feed rate of cadmium to the incinerator
- Storing used oil fuel (VFS Distillate) from the Safety-Kleen East Chicago facility in the fuel oil tank and burning it in the incinerator when the incinerator did not meet all of the operating conditions for burning hazardous waste
- failing to record the location of each container accepted in the container storage areas, and track these wastes in real time so that their location is known at any time
- Accepting pyrophoric wastes
- Placing incompatible wastes or materials in the same container and failing to document any evaluation of the compatibility of the absorbent with the liquid
- Failing to retain the data recorded by the PI archiving system for at least three years
- Failing to maintain systems to automatically cut off hazardous waste feed to the incinerator at a pH of less than 6.2 in the second stage packed tower effluent
- Failing to retain a copy of a manifest at the facility for at least three years
- Failing to analyze the slag for methanol daily until analyses showed the treatment standards had been achieved for seven consecutive days after methanol was detected at a level above the treatment standards
- Entering the wrong generator name, address, and phone number on manifests accompanying wastes shipped by Safety-Kleen (Aragonite), Inc. for off-site treatment, storage, or disposal

This list is from here: http://lethaldose.wordpress.com/2007/03/21/hazardous-waste-in-the-pet-food-yum/

Luba, of Toronto, CA, resigned after the bankruptcy/violations/lawsuit settlement. Little wonder he's now poisoning pets!

And, here's a picture of the bastard, for your dartboard pleasure:

7. The pet food industry will not recover from this. People love
Edited on Sun Mar-25-07 09:20 AM by tblue37
their pets as if they were their children. My kids are adults now--my 3 cats are my babies. I didn't give them any of that bad food, but if I had, and if they had died from it, or even gotten sick--well, I know I would be totally destroyed.

There is at least one whole website devoted to helping people deal with their grief over losing pets to this SNAFU. Actually, there are probably several.

This is a very, very big deal, and it might drive renewed regulation even of the human food supply in this country, as well as recognition of the damage deregulators cause and why we need to pay taxes and have a properly functioning government.

8. GRRR! Cutting corners to save money never works!!!
Which is probably exactly what happened at Menu Foods which is why they refuse to identify the "source" of the wheat gluten. As a cat owner who USED to feed my cats Iams, and a biologist who is familiar with biohazardous waste regulations (and let me tell you those are SERIOUS problems cited there- especially mixing incompatabile wastes-that could lead to major explosions or fire!) that really PISSES me OFF. Why oh why do corporate idiots not understand that safety is foremost, and should never be looked at as a place to cut costs!:grr: :grr: :grr:    :argh:

18. Not all psychopaths commit violent crimes. Some go for cut-throat business practices in corporations
Psychopath in a Suit
http://www.theage.com.au/articles/2003/02/20/1045638423969.html

ot a murderer, a vicious criminal or rapacious scam-meister. But we know the type. Oozing charm and charisma but with no emotional depth; more sizzle than steak. These are the ones who are manipulative and ruthless enough to do whatever it takes and stick the knife into anyone standing in their way. With their finely honed political skills, sharp timing and chameleon-like abilities, they thrive on risk, chaos and upheaval. And they are cold-blooded enough to claim later that they did nothing wrong.

Research done by Dr Robert Hare, emeritus professor of psychology at the University of British Columbia and a New York-based colleague Dr Paul Babiak indicates the psychopath usually seduces and takes over in five stages.

First, comes the entry phase, in which the psychopath charms the hiring team into selecting him or her for the job. Then comes the assessment phase. Here, the psychopathic employee identifies the potential support network of Patrons (those who will protect and defend the psychopath), Pawns (those who can be unwittingly manipulated into using their power in service of the psychopath's aims), and Organisational Police (staff in such control functions as audit, security, human resources who might get in the way). Stage three is manipulation: the psychopath works the patrons and pawns, building the influence network through close and intense one-on-one relationships and at the same time moving up the organisation. The next stage is confrontation. Individuals no longer deemed useful discover they've been wiped, relegated from close friend to Patsy. Two factions start forming: influential supporters (Pawns and Patrons); and powerless detractors (Patsies and Police). Finally, there's ascension. That's when all that planning and manipulation pays off - the patrons are betrayed, the boss is shoved aside and the psychopath moves in.

{snip}

Hare himself estimates that psychopaths account for only about 1 per cent of the general population.

But he says there would be a higher proportion in such areas as business, politics, law enforcement agencies, law firms, religious organisations and yes, the media.

their business practices are heartless because they have empathy for any creature but themselves. Incidents like this make me say that any large business should require the people in charge to be tested for psychopathology. Ditto for the government.

Corporate directors don't usually make the day-to-day business decisions, thought. Look to the President and the VP's for the ones who are probably more involved in why this happened.

getting "page cannot be found" on all the name links. It was OK a few minutes ago.

Edit: source directory was changed, but now it's changed back. Strange.
Edit 2: links on their site are all messed up. I don't know if they've changes some but not others, or have always had broken links, but you can get to director information from some pages, but not from others. As I said, strange.

12. Thank you!
I couldn't find all that info - as you said, everything on their site is now hidden except for the recall info. Being a Canadian company either I didn't know where to look or it's not as easy to find the other info.

I find it appalling too that they haven't offered a single comment on the situation. I realize for legal reasons they aren't going to come out and say it's their fault - but even some carefully worded meaningless generic statement would have been better than nothing at all.

There is no punishment too great or too awful for these thugs.

14. k&r. here's a fun fact about safety kleen
Edited on Sun Mar-25-07 10:14 PM by orleans
"Safety-Kleen's 279-acre landfill is within a few hundred yards of Lake Marion, one of South Carolina's most popular recreational lakes.

"For more than 20 years, the site accepted more than 5.6 million tons of hazardous waste and industrial garbage. Chemicals in the landfill include mercury, arsenic and lead, The landfill closed in September 2000.

"Last year, DHEC accused Safety-Kleen of failing to tell the agency of problems with a protective liner. The company also was accused of using a firm it owns to certify that parts of the landfill were safe. Such certifications are supposed to be made by independent companies."
