Did Karl Rove call for a "permanent Republican majority"?
Many liberal sites and blogs claim he said it, but I have been unable to find any evidence that Rove did say it. The closest I found was an MSNBC transcript with right-wing lackey Tim Russert. Anyone have a better link than the following, perhaps to an actual quote by Rove in which he used the phrase?

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6430019/

MR. RUSSERT: You have said that you--your ultimate goal is a permanent Republican majority. What does that mean?

MR. ROVE: Well, first of all, there are no permanent majorities in American politics. They last for about 20 or 30 or 40 or, in the case of the Roosevelt coalition, 50 or 60 years and then they disappear. But would I like to see the Republican Party be the dominant party for whatever time history gives it the chance to be? You bet.

1. That was the entire point of the K Street Project
Whether Rove himself ever said those words in public I do not know, his bosses certainly have though.

9. Tom Delay still has P.R.M. as an ideal as of his (NPR) Morning Edition interview a few days ago.

2. Yes, he said it
The Controller: Karl Rove Is Working to Get George Bush Reelected, But He Has Bigger Plans

Nicholas Lemann's in-depth 2003 New Yorker profile of Karl Rove: "Rove is both a fox and a hedgehog. He is the detail man of all detail men, but he also makes a point of doing more long-term strategic planning than other political consultants. … Rove's main goal over the next year and a half is making George W. Bush what his father wasn't, a reelected President -- when I asked if he had mapped out the campaign, he said, 'Don't expect me to answer this question' -- he is too ambitious to want only that. The real prize is creating a Republican majority that would be as solid as, say, the Democratic coalition that Franklin Roosevelt created -- a majority that would last for a generation and that, as it played itself out over time, would wind up profoundly changing the relationship between citizen and state in this country." (The New Yorker, May 12, 2003)

3. It doesn't matter if he actually SAID it.
It matters that he's actually trying to ACHIEVE it!

5. You yourself have provided a source. As he explained, he meant "permanent" as in 20 or more years,
a generation or more.

7. permanent majority (of "our party")=totalitarianism
any political operative who calls for this has no clue what an American Democracy is all about. These guys are Nazis, plain and simple.

It might be understandable if the policies of the party were so popular that they got voted in again and again becasuse the people believe in the program. (i.e., the Democrats with the New Deal)The Repoublicans have policies only a tiny minority believe in (eternal war, hate the gays, hate minorities, no help for the lower classes, lavish entitlements to the already rich.)

What these arrogant priggish deluded people want can't be gotten from a fair vote of the American People. They can only cheat and lie to get and stay in office.
Karl Rove, who did everything her could to establish a dictatorship in this country, is UnAmerican and Evil.

10. grover norquist is also a key player in this.
from the washington post

http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp-dyn/A8423-2004Jan11?language=printer

Democrats used to anger him, Norquist said. He's past angry now. "Do you get mad at cancer? We'll defeat and crush their institutions, and the trial lawyers will go sell pizza. We're not going to hang them. Most of the people on the left will be happy in Grover's world. I feel about the left the way Rumsfeld felt about the Iraqis."

And after Norquist purges the United States, there is the rest of the world. He says this with the confidence of a man who uses a black laundry marker as a pen. He has helped start Wednesday meetings in Canada, New Zealand, England and Japan. He has learned to be patient: "I now understand you can't just explain to the idiots how to do it and to see it your way, because they're too foolish to see it."

Norquist knows he will survive politically, as sure as he outlived Reagan and Gingrich. He will always be relevant, he said, because he embodies the issue that unifies Republicans: lower taxes.
