Nelson (D-NE) and Collins (R-ME) seeking $80-$100 billion in cuts from stimulus

Mostly in education.

http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2009/02/collins-nelson-group-wants-779b-slashed-from-stimulus-1.php

:grr:

1. I was elated when I read the details of the education portion of the stimulus. Virtually unprecedented, and desperately needed. If they lose it, I'll be mightily upset;

2. I've been researching and writing an essay all week on these education spending plans detailed in the stimulus...and it looks to have been for naught.

#1 is big picture. #2 is totally selfish.

The bill has to pass. I know this. Beyond all the people who need what it has to offer, the Obama administration will be absolutely crippled if this thing fails...and that means everything else we have to do will be in peril. We now may have to fill a SCOTUS seat, and if the administration blows this bill, all Hell will break loose if it comes time to tap a new Justice Gotta get this done.

But God damn it all anyway.

2. I would not want them to invest in the future. BTW, I have been
to Aroostock County, ME, and Collins needs to put her constituents before, as Jeff Session would say, the Taliban GOP.

I have no clue why the people of Maine keep electing her.

11. Sorry, Maine-ah. But those people in Aroostook County needed
help before the economic crisis.

My daughter lives up there. I just don't understand it. They are so GOP, so Glen Beck, and then they look across the border at the Canadians who are doing better with fewer worries, sneer at them for being socialist. And they are related (I learned that they marry back and forth across the border all the time.)

4. Frankly I think the JOBS bill should be doubled.
What ever the banks got we should at least double that and probably triple it. And the largest share should go towards next generation energy production and conservation. Now is the perfect time to get us off the oil teat.

5. This SUCKS, But....
Keep in mind, it does not mean that these programs will not get funded, just not funded w/ THIS bill. I know, it sucks, these are for the most part good programs that would be good parts of the bill, but for the sake of political expedience, it may not be such a terrible idea to compromise on this NOW, knowing it will get funded at some point, hopefully sooner rather than later.
