I don't pay taxes?????
Edited on Wed Feb-11-09 02:25 PM by madamesilverspurs
Since when, Sen. Hatch?

Okay, my income taxes have been greatly reduced since I became disabled. Guess we can just ignore all those years when I was able-bodied enough to pay more income tax than I do now.

On a local level, any time I buy ANYTHING there are sales taxes attached. And seeing as how I buy most of my clothing and household items at thrift stores, those purchases provide the state with a second tax on items that were previously sold at full retail, right?

My vehicle may be older and uglier than yours, Sen. Hatch, but every year I still have to pay for the license plates. Do I need to mention the gasoline taxes?

Unlike you, Sen. Hatch, my income (which is limited to a Social Security check) doesn't allow me the luxury of contributing to the promotion of hateful ballot initiatives. But is that any reason for you to dismiss me from any "worthiness" to receive any benefit from economic stimulus?

Trust me when I tell you that the splendor of the surroundings afforded by my taxpayer-funded Social Security check doesn't even come close to those comforts provided by your taxpayer-funded salary. Don't believe me, Sen. Hatch? Fine. In that case I invite you to spend some time in the hell to which you have already consigned the underprivileged of this country.

2. amen- and everything
we purchase, be it electricity, phone services, rent, a magazine, newspaper, has 'taxes' figured into the final price tag. The produce we purchase in the winter from our grocery reflect the taxes paid by the farmer for the land, for the laborers who plant and harvest, the wholesalers, truckers, store owners, advertisers etc...

We ALL pay taxes directly and indirectly and for those who have little to begin with, the proportion is undeniably greater.

Great point- great post, k&r

4. sometimes i feel like if we abolished the income tax we'd abolish the republican party along with it
they are so fixated with the income tax that they forget, or pretend to forget, about all others, at least when it comes to poorer people. their understanding of other taxes seems limited to estate taxes and corporate taxes.

most of us pay less in income taxes than we do in other taxes, especially once you add in the employer's share of payroll taxes (which effectively come out of your wages).

of course, i'm not in favor of abolishing the income tax, if we did the republicans would find something else to gripe about like unions or lawsuits brought by consumers.

6. The question for the obstructionists is...
...exactly whom do they want to continue being able to spend? Those are folks who should immediately benefit from stimulus.

If simple humanity won't move the GOP--and it won't--practicality, finally, ought to.

7. You're dreaming. If we're fer it, they're agin it. Period.
It's not about what's best for the country or teh peoples, but regaining and retaining power.
