Salmonella-flavored peanut-butter maker files for bankruptcy.

One day after refusing to testify against himself before Congress and after Texas closes down another one of his plants, president and owner of Peanut Corporation of America Stewart Parnell hopes to protect his wealth behind corporate bankruptcy laws.

ATLANTA – The peanut processing company at the heart of a national salmonella outbreak is going out of business. The Lynchburg, Va.-based Peanut Corp. of America filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Virginia Friday, the latest bad news for the company that has been accused of producing tainted peanut products that may have reached everyone from poor school children to disaster victims.

"It's regrettable, but it's inevitable with the events of last month," said Andrew S. Goldstein, a bankruptcy lawyer in Roanoke, Va., who filed the petition.

While hundreds of thousands of families have lost their homes after having already lost their jobs (not to mention losing protections with new individual bankruptcy laws) Stewart Parnell hides behind the privileges his wealth has purchased at the cost of nine deaths due to his business.

Despicable.

1. Because they think this will keep them from being sued?
Some prosecutor needs to arrest these people for attempted murder.

was the peanut butter industry bleeding green too? Is there not one profitable corporation in this country?
