Palin to the poor in Alaska - go hunt your own moose
See it here in all its glory - Palin press conference.

When asked about what the state is doing for the poor - she bragged about "extending the moose season" - "there's good protein out there for people to hunt".

8. That Doesn't Make It A Proper Governmental Policy For Poor People

I fervently hope that Palin is the Republican's 2012 candidate. God love her, she just can't help herself.....

9. Agreed, but survival hunting is more common than many urbanites understand
It was important to us for a while growing up.

10. Are Republicans fair game?
I wouldn't want some Democratic union member -- too tough. Now a Republican from Wall Street, never done a hard day's work in his life, well marbled from too much good living, they could be pretty tasty with the right marinade!

19. Nothing wrong with that
but it does take a certain skill which is not easily picked up in a day. Certainly not good policy from an elected leader.

22. You're right, and if the extend season is ecologically supportable it's a good
move on her part. However, for a governor to boast of it as an example of sound policy is like a surgeon boasting about putting a band-aid on a sucking chest wound...

6. Millions of good Democrats
hunt for meat. We eat almost only venison and we live in Ohio. We seldom buy beef. Not to say what Sarah Palin is advocating is a good thing. The moose population is Alaska is already overstressed.

Why not go hunting at Republican fund raisers? That Karl Rove would be mighty tasty with a little soy-ginger sauce!

Eating venison is acceptable in polite society. Eating Republicans, however, is not.

Those "anonymous bloggers" that she hates so much have probably saved some lives this winter. Please read this article from this morning's Anchorage Daily News -- it'll warm your heart.

"Worldwide Donations Find Way to Lower Yukon" http://www.adn.com/news/alaska/story/690057.html

A wave of donated food and cash has swept into lower Yukon River villages over the past month, with more than 19,000 pounds of supplies and $13,000 landing in Emmonak alone.

Money appeared from donors in England and Bangkok. Villagers hundreds of miles away on the frozen edge of the state pitched in dried fish and muktuk. And, organizers say, much more help is on the way.

Cindy Beans has been tracking the gifts of peanut butter and rice and coffee for the Emmonak tribal council, where she watched the scene from her office window on Wednesday. Five, six, seven people passed by within 20 minutes on their way to the warehouse, each hauling away a small box of food on plastic sleds and snowmachines.

"Every day when it opens up, there's a flood of people heading over there," Beans said. When someone donates money, the council gives out vouchers for free fuel, 10 gallons at a time.

<snip>

The story began when an Emmonak man described his neighbors' plight in a January letter to rural newspapers. The call for help soon spread to neighboring western Alaska villages, amplified by bloggers who raised money to send a photographer to the village, and then coverage in larger and larger news media, including a CNN report over the weekend that hinged on that same photographer's footage.

<snip> - much more

Stories like this restore my faith in humanity. Economic problems in the villages are very serious, and there will need to be some long-term changes -- but at least some much-needed attention has been drawn to the area now and maybe we'll start to find some solutions.

-----

ed. Extending the moose season is not a bad idea -- these are subsistence hunters, after all -- but it's far too little and much too late.

31. To hear her tell it -- next to impossible.
I really hate to accuse her of racism (well, not really), but my guess is if her neighbors in Wasilla had been the ones suffering such a crisis instead of poor Native people out in the Bush, we would have seen a completely different response from her.

33. It helps but yes "far too little and much too late"
Why don't they look at the cause of the situation for instance Alaska having the highest fuel prices in the nation, which is also the reason that the food prices are so high. (see Gas price mystery:Rep. Ramras relies on intuition, leaves Alaskans wondering http://www.adn.com/opinion/view/story/683191.html?pageNum=3&&mi_pluck_action=page_nav#Comments_Container)

...Or perhaps let the subsistence fishermen get their fish before the greedy out of state commercial fishermen?

On a side note: We had a huge moose right smack in the middle of the front lawn this morning- way up close and personal. Then it's yearling came out and munched some willow right outside the window- so cute!

(not actually my picture but looked something like this)

34. I definitely agree on the factory trawlers.
The "market" should forego it's taste for imitation crab and fish sticks for a few years, and leave the pollack fishery alone. Then maybe the wild salmon stocks would rebound. Or, as you say, if the people along the rivers could take their fish first.

I did link you to Phil Munger's excellent blog entry on this, didn't I? http://progressivealaska.blogspot.com/2009/02/post-super-bowl-perspective-on-yukon.html

Nice moose -- I haven't seen too many in our neighborhood lately, but I'm sure they're around.

Or is everyone in Alaska issued a gun upon birth? And even then, ammo costs money, too.
