Made in America.
I didn't tell you all what I got for Christmas. A set of the BEST 6 knives that I have ever had the plaasure to own.

I first saw these knives at an art gallery "somewhere in Iowa". The handles were/are beautiful.....well balanced.

My kids think I'm *freakish* b/c I wanted these knves for my Christmas present. I LOVE these knives....the best I've ever owned (so far).

I am AMAZED that this one guy produces such a superior product. Handmade and affordable in the USA.

Buy American. American 'hand-crafters' - They're the BEST!

3. But, but, but ....why do you hate America?

Don't you realize that there IS NO AMERICAN who can make any goods and there are NO AMERICANS who will pay for American made, quality goods!!!!!

At least that's what I've been told here on DU.

Why don't you support all the corporations importing cheap Chinese crap? Don't you realize you are in a dream world and you buying AMERICAN is going to cause massive layoffs and unemployment?

:sarcasm:

Proud to give this the first rec....:)

6. Well where is the link?
I do buy American made when I can find (and afford)
and my steak knives are 2 partial sets on pair given as a bank promo soo long ago and the others belonged to my grandma that are the serrated kind that are worn to nubs.

7. O.K. How about some pics and a link?
What kind of knifes? Kitchen? Working? Pocket? Steak?

Why do you like them? Almost any decent quality knife is very sharp when new but can you easily re-sharpen it? Most contemporary knifes are Stainless steel. They hold an edge well but are a bitch to re-sharpen. Carbon steel knifes don't hold an edge as long but are much easier to re-sharpen. They are also really hard to find now a days.

Hannible Lechter knew the difference.

I am a die hard buy American fan and always looking for good knifes but you need to provide more info if you wish to encourage others to buy the ones you got.

10. Edge holding
A well hardened and tempered carbon blade can hold an edge for a long time. The older carbon steel knives were only hardened to about 45-50 on the rockwell scale. Most hand made knives now are hardened to 59-60, and very durable.

13. Mark, Welcome to DU
I tried to PM you but apparently you are too new. I was just in Tucson. The snow sucked.

Occasionally on DU people post things that they know about that have nothing to do with politics. I have been thinking about posting a thread about knifes. What to look for, how to care for them, how to sharpen them, etc. I know more about knifes than about 80% of the general public but if you are forging your own Damask steel knives, you know way more than I do about the subject. Is this something you would care to be involved with? It won't take much time because I don't have a lot of spare time but I thought it would be nice to share knowledge about something everybody has and uses but so few actually know anything about.

I don't know if you can PM me or not so I am hijacking this thread in hopes that you see this.
Bud

14. Hi Bud,
Thanks for the kind words. I was hesitant to post that link, as I didn't want to self promote. But I have to admit I finally signed up here because of this thread. I've been a lurker for years, but never had the time to spend. But of course now with the economy, I have lots of free time. I would be very interested in your idea. I dont know about how to message you, but go ahead and e-mail me if you want. Anything that would help promote the knifemakers and increse general knowledge is a good thing!

18. Mark, apparently you don't have enough posts to allow me
to PM you through DU. I don't know how many posts it requires but you don't have enough yet. Send me your e-mail address to cheguaverra@yahoo.com. I know cheguaverra is spelled wrong. I did that on purpose. It's also a "throw away" address so I'm not worried about spammers. I'll go ahead and start a thread about knifes later today or tomorrow and will e-mail you the link and you can feel free to jump in anytime. I'm sure the knowledge you have to share will be invaluable to many folks here.
Bud

That is pricey but most of my work is cheaper. That was just a lot of work on the anvil. My shoulder was worn out so it cost more!

19. I didn't mean to imply that it was too pricey for the knife
only for me it is. That is a beautiful knife well worth whatever you ask. I could imagine the pounding it must have taken to make. I create items using steal and am in the process of designing a yard car for myself using the running gear from a discarded invacare powerchair. A few more days on AutoCad and then I'm ready to start building it. My last project was a yard car using the running gear from a '77 subaru all wheel drive wagon and the electric motor from a golf cart for my brother who has a sawmill business.

Here is a couple photos of it

21. Not sure exactly what Mind-your-head meant,
but www.radacutlery.com offers wonderful knives made in the town just north from me, reasonably priced. We use them in the school kitchens in my town, so yes, they are good quality.
