Self Portrait

My son is attending The Art Institute of San Fransisco, he sent me a copy of his latest work for one of his classes.
I thought it was really good, and wanted to share. He was to incorporate the style of his favorite artist with his own. See if you can guess who his favorite painter is?

his face tells the story of many, who struggle with long term illness and uncertainty in todays society with little or no health care.
The worry many of our disabled and ill have not knowing if they will have to choose between next month meds or a roof over their heads.
Their struggles in finding a place in our society. I guess because I know my son's story, so I recognize it and others don't.

However, the expression reminds me of portraits painted by Freud.
Is it a digital work, a painting or a combination of both?

4. Its ink but...

the finished product could be a combination of scanning and digital. I will have to ask him. He has loved chalk and markers since he was three, his love of art got him through many years of hospitalization during his teen years and his continued struggle with dermatomyositis..
I do see more of Freud style than his favorite artist, Van Gogh .

In the last three years he has been well enough to attend college, wanting so much to contribute and feel a part of society.
Being his mom I know his struggles, there are many out there with the same story. They are invisible, the poor, disabled and sick, the first to be sacrificed in budget cuts.
