Oklahoma Votes on Taking Gitmo Detainees: Thanks, but No Thanks!

Heard about this last night from a friend in OKC.
These guys really come off sounding like total (GOP) idiots.



Resolution passes to restrict Guantanamo Bay transfers into Oklahoma

House members spent more than an hour Thursday on a nonbinding resolution asking President Barack Obama and Congress to keep terrorist detainees out of Oklahoma.

House Resolution 1008 passed easily, 81-12. Those opposed said they were as patriotic as supporters, but that Oklahoma is prepared to handle the task and it could bring economic security to the state.

The resolution, authored by Reps. T.W. Shannon, R-Lawton, Mike Reynolds, R-Oklahoma City, and Fred Jordan, R-Jenks, requests that Guantanamo Bay detainees not be transferred to any prison in Oklahoma and mentions the Federal Correctional Institution in El Reno, the Fort Sill Regional Confinement Center and the Federal Transfer Center in Oklahoma City. It cites a concern that Oklahoma, by housing terrorist detainees, could become a terrorist target.

"Since when did Oklahomans become a bunch of stinking cowards?” asked Rep. Terry Harrison, D-McAlester. "Let’s bring them to Oklahoma. ... Let’s build a fence around them. ... Let’s charge them with a crime. Let’s try them. If they’re convicted, let’s execute them.”

Support for the resolution
Rep. Rex Duncan, R-Sand Springs, said the resolution is "the most biggest, no-brainer bill” that House members would vote on this session, saying he hoped anyone who voted against the resolution either is term-limited or would be defeated in the 2010 elections.

Rep. Shane Jett, RTecumseh, said keeping the detainees could result in federal funds coming to the state.

Any detainee who would escape wouldn’t get far before some "country boys” and the Oklahoma Highway Patrol would catch them, the lawmaker said.

torture people abroad, don't charge them, hold them indefinitely, but please, keep it out of our backyard.

I understand that the horror of 1995 Murrah Building bombing still has an effect on many in Oklahoma, but these state legislators are disgusting in their remarks that are now part of the state record.

As a native Oklahoman, am disgusted and embarrassed, but am also not surprised.
Jesus leads the way on every street corner there.
And then those political "leaders" go out of their way to amp up racism and hatred.
