It's not like CA is in danger of turning red, but I think this article about CA Republicans is a microcosm of what is going to happen to the GOP in general over the next several years.


California's GOP feuds over future philosophy


The bad blood in the party was evident at the convention. On Saturday, state party vice chair Jon Fleischman angrily confronted state Sen. Abel Maldonado, R-Santa Maria (Santa Barbara County), who made his name last week by providing the critical vote needed to pass the state budget.

"You voted for the largest tax increase in the country when you could have stopped it," said Fleischman, publisher of the GOP Web site Flashreport.com, which had publicly pressured Republicans to stand united against the package of $15 billion in spending cuts and $12.5 billion in new taxes. "Good call."

As an open-mouthed crowd of Republicans looked on, Maldonado - viewed as a turncoat by some Republicans, and a hero by others - coolly shot back: "We need a change."

"If we're going to be the party that doesn't pick its head up out of the sand, or just says, no, no, no, no, no - then we're never going to be the party of the majority," he said.

In the coming months, "we're going to talk a lot about reform ... reform, reform, reform," Maldonado predicted. "And if my party doesn't like it ... then I'll be looking at it in the rearview mirror."

Two overrich assholes standing in a burning house, arguing over where to hang the Matisse.

Reagan, Deukmejian and Wilson are definitely not liberals, but they all approved tax increases on occasion to balance CA's budget. However, the new breed of California Republicans are trying to bring CA down with almost a religious fervor. Indeed, after ousting their Senate leader, the new Senate leader insisted that budget negotiations start from scratch while California struggle to meat its current obligations.

I can almost support Maldonaldo's proposed open primaries, because the California GOP has become increasily insular and detatched from reality as its numbers have shrunk. This would normally be a good thing, except for California's 2/3 budget approval requirement. The crazed CA GOP can bring down California, and with it, a good portion of the American economy, by attempting to bankrupt California. They are the American Taliban worshipping at the alter of tax cuts.
