1. Trading stops if the market drops too much too quickly.
But for an actual price, it can go as low as it wants to, as it seems to be doing. Soon to be below 7K. Who knows what the bottom is? Meanwhile we all get poorer.

2. It can halt but that is based off of percentages and not points.

3. I think trading is stopped when the market goes down...
...a certain number of points in one trading day.

I think it's around a 700 or 800 point drop in the DOW, if I'm not mistaken.

5. They won't close the market
unless it starts going into a catastrophic free-fall, which is defined arbitrarily. For example if the market loses 2% of its value over the course of a day (about 200 points, we'll say) the market would likely stay open. If the market lost 2% in the first hour and showed signs of worsening, then it would probably be closed early for heads to cool.

As I write this now, it's about 3:40. The market's closing in 20 minutes anyway. It won't close early today.

6. Some info on losses to halt trading.
The Dow Jones would have to fall 1,100 points in a day for a stoppage to take effect. If that mark is reached before 2 p.m. Eastern time, the market would close for an hour. If it drops 1,100 between 2 and 2:30 p.m., the stoppage would last 30 minutes. If the stoppage occurs after 2:30 p.m., trading would not resume for the rest of the day.

If the Dow Jones drops 2,200 points before 1 p.m. Eastern time, the market will close for two hours. The same decline between 1 to 2 p.m. would cause a one-hour delay, and the market would close for the day if the 2,200 mark were reached after 2 p.m.

If the DJI plummets 3,350 points, the stock exchange will close for the day regardless of when the mark is reached.

7. No. Suspension of trading comes when certain percentage points
of loss are exceeded. This is still a slow enough drop that trading likely won't be suspended even as it heads toward the 4000 I think it will.
