"The Curse of Randi Rhodes: Nova M's Successor "On Second Thought" Padlocked in Phoenix"
i just googled randi to maybe see what was up with her and found this:

above title

"I'd been tipped off that KNUV 1190 AM, formerly the flagship station of the liberal Nova M radio network, and briefly, the home of Nova M's successor network, On Second Thought, had been padlocked. So I had to see for myself, as On Second Thought's driving force, Mike Newcomb, was apparently doing his afternoon show today as usual. At least, that's the way it sounded to someone who's not a regular listener of Newcomb's show.

"But as you can see from the photo above, 1190 AM's offices are indeed chained up. The security guard for the building told me that the padlocking occurred today. When I asked why, he shrugged and said, "Something to do with the rent."

-snip

"So why is 1190 AM still broadcasting as of 9 PM Monday? According Sean Ryan, a producer at the station and briefly a GM at the station until he parted ways with the Drobnys in February, 1190 AM is currently on auto-pilot, playing "best ofs" until it ultimately goes dark.

"Without Rhodes, the only star in Nova M's stable, this ignoble decline was likely inevitable. Newcomb was left with himself as talent, Nancy Skinner, and Mike Malloy. Not much of a team there. And on top of that, they had bills piling up. Ironically, I was on what may be one of the station's last broadcasts, as a guest on Todd Landfried's Saturday afternoon Desert Politics show. That is, unless something unforseen occurs, and unlocks that frickin' padlock.

11. Why are people still trying to blame either Randi Rhodes or Nova-M?
The progressive talk radio business is damned rough these days, so who can hold anyone at fault?

Nova-M apparently couldn't get enough advertising revenue and ran out of money.

Randi went off the air because apparently she wasn't getting paid, and if the rumor's correct, her liability insurance policy wasn't getting paid, leaving her vulnerable to lawsuits from what she said on the air.

Apparently, Nova-M and their successor can't pay their other bills either right now. Do I blame them? Not really - it's a shitty market, we're in a depression, and they couldn't stay afloat. It's like the restaurant business - I've met a few nice folks who tried opening restaurants, and they were awesome restaurants, but they couldn't make enough money, fell behind on their bills and had to fold.

We can choose to scream at each other over who's fault it was, or we can just attribute it to a tough business environment and move on.

2. Malloy wasn't live tonight
But his blog indicated that it was the snowstorm in Georgia (where he's located) that was preventing him from broadcasting. That would really suck if they're off the air permanently. :evilfrown:

5. Nova M leased KNUV. On Second Thought took over, but after Nova M folded, the station
went back on the market. (The station owners already having gone into bankruptcy IIRC in late 2008.)

But with no Nova M, On Second Thought trying to pick up the pieces in just two weeks and allegedly unpaid rent...it appears the station owners just decided to lock the station down.

AFAIK, NovaM/On Second Thought only syndicates Mike Malloy and Nancy Skinner. They may be able to still do that if they can work through this period. But for now it at least it appears they don't have a station in Phoenix.

7. Wow it's all very confusing
When she fell out with Air America it seemed like she was immediately back on the air -- now it's as if she's been disappeared!

8. The KNUV stream cut out during the Nancy Skinner show
I guess it's hard trying to do a remote when you can't even monitor what's going on with the equipment.

What a sad state of affairs for progressive radio.

And I don't blame Randi for any of it.

12. oh dear...
i hope content continues. and most of all worry that if worst comes to worst and things shut down for good can i get the autocharge on my CC to stop. sometimes that's a pain in the ass to shut down -- imagine if the target institution is no longer extant to talk to the CC? i only have a miniscule budget for entertainment, so when Malloy and Randi were together i was happy. but now, i'm sad.

hopefully they'll come back. i think the smart choice would be to webcast the whole thing and let people pay for Malloy being able to curse up a storm. throw in some advertising into the mix and should be good to go. but that's just wishful thinking.

13. The network says Malloy and Skinner should be aired live tomorrow (Wednesday):
Programming Note:

The Nancy Skinner and Mike Malloy Shows are being re-engineered as a result of the transfer of the base of operations.

It was our hope that the technical stuff was all worked out by airtime today but as it turns out, re-configuring network shows required a bit more work.

Today you’ll have “Best of Shows” again. The good news is the shows will both be live tomorrow. Sorry for the inconvenience and tune in tomorrow.

You know it’ll be great radio!

14. Nancy Skinner is temporarily replacing Randi on LA's ktlk
She is amazingly boring. Malloy is mostly preempted by sports events. Rachel is only on for an hour at 5 am.

The whole thing stinks.

15. Hmmmm.... I listen on 1190 AM and
the programs are not best of. Both yesterday and today the shows (Stephanie Millar, Thom Hartmann) were live.
On Monday about 8am the usual shows were kicked off for Lionel and someone else who's name I don't remember.

I hope things get worked out. I'd really miss Stephanie's and Thom's show.
