People who've really studied Walmart know they dictate price to their suppliers. They also have written into their contracts a clause that allows them to inspect a vendor's books and dictate cost reductions. You guys are making polyurethane out of MDI? Oh no...you can get TDI for cheaper, so if you want to keep our business you switch to it right now. And if you have to offshore your factory because your local air quality board won't allow you to use TDI, oh well...if you want the privilege of selling to the World's Largest Retailer, you do it.
(Oh yes...while searching for what MDI stood for, I found this...read the caption under the picture of the machine. I love translations done by people who don't actually speak English...)
It seems to me that if Walmart's auditors can find inefficiencies in companies that make potholders, they sure as HELL should be able to find them in banks.
