Mall wants Manilow music to Drive out unruly Teens
This is in response to the thread last week about the sound used that supposedly can only be heard by those under 25. Somebody on that thread suggested using Barry Manilow music. I ran across this today. LOL. Sorry for the link, you can't copy and paste from comcast news.

From New Zealand, they hope that Barry Manilow will either pacify teens or drive them away.

I'm doubting it will work.

2. Teens spend money
I can't see this being any kind of trend, especially in the US. Although I will say they're on the right track!

15. No pity necessary. ASCAP is on the case!!!
 I LOVE BARRY! He's a terrific showman. I saw him back in the day when my brother played bass with his band. EVERYONE was there singing along, from little kids to grandparents to the "Fanilows" who followed him around in busses from gig to gig. 20 years before that he and Bette were the hit of my neighborhood on the Upper West Side. The "art" of song writing and appreciation of it has been lost in this modern world...

7. Classical music worked for me.
Back when I was a young delinquent, a bunch of us hung out in the parking lot of a 7-11 down the street -- sort of a first-stop meeting place so that everyone could figure out what they were doing for the evening, where the parties were, etc.

Until the owner of the 7-11 started playing Mozart. That cleared us out right quick.

Daybreak

-Artist: Barry Manilow as sung on "Greatest Hits" -Arista A2L 8601
-peak Billboard position # 23 in 1977
-Words and Music by Barry Manilow and Adrienne Anderson

I'm singin' to the world, it's time we let the spirit come in
Let it come on in
I'm singin' to the world, everybody's caught in the spin
Look at where we've been
We've been runnin' around, year after year
Blinded with pride, blinded with fear

But it's daybreak, if you wanna believe
It can be daybreak, ain't no time to grieve
Said it's daybreak if you'll only believe
And let it shine, shine, shine
All around the world (sing it to the world, sing, sing)
SPOKEN: Play it, girl (sing it to the world, sing, sing)

Singin' to the world, what's the point in puttin' it down?
There's so much love to share
I'm singin' to the world, don't you see it all comes around?
The feeling's everywhere
We've been closin' our eyes, day after day
Covered in clouds, losin' our way

Hey, but it's daybreak
If you wanna believe, it can be daybreak
Ain't no time to grieve
Said it's daybreak, if you'll only believe
And let it shine, shine, shine
All around the world (gotta sing, sing it to the world)

SPOKEN: Ya sound great!!
(gotta sing, sing it to the world)

Yes, and it's daybreak
If you wanna believe, it can be daybreak
Ain't no time to grieve
Said it's daybreak, if you'll only believe
And let it shine, shine, shine
All around the world (let's sing, sing it to the world)
Let it shine, shine, shine
All around the world (sing it to the world, sing, sing)
(sing it to the world, sing, sing)
Said it's day-ee-ay-ee-aybreak

<Mixture> Barry sings "Can ya feel it? It's day-ee-ay-ee-aybreak and "Can ya see
it? It's day-ee-ay-ee-aybreak" while background singers continue with (sing it to the
world, sing, sing)>

SPOKEN: "Somebody yell "one more time!" Ya may as well go all the way"
<crowd responds and Barry adds "ONE MORE TIME!!">

Yes, and it's daybreak
If you wanna believe, it can be daybreak
Ain't no time to grieve
Said it's daybreak, if you'll only believe
And let it shine, shine, shine
All around the world (let's sing, sing it to the world)
C'mon and let it shine, shine, shine
All around the world (sing it to the world, sing, sing)

Around the world (sing it to the world, sing, sing to the world!)

WELLINGTON, New Zealand — It'll be Barry Manilow versus the mall rats. The New Zealand city of Christchurch hopes that putting the American crooner's smooth and gentle tones into the mix of music to be broadcast through the central mall district can pacify unruly teens who congregate there_ or at least convince them to go elsewhere.

"The intention is to change the environment in a positive way ... so nobody feels threatened or intimidated," Central City Business Association manager Paul Lonsdale told The Associated Press. "I did not say Barry Manilow is a weapon of mass destruction."

A group of several dozen young people regularly spread rubbish, spray graffiti, get intoxicated, use drugs, swear and intimidate patrons at the outdoor mall, he said.

The city council, police and local property owners covering 410 businesses agree that "nice, easy listening" music like Manilow's "Can't Smile Without You," "Mandy" and other hits might change the behavior of loitering teens.

18. I Made It Through the Mall
I made it through the mall
I kept my purse protected
I made it through the mall
I kept my credit, too
I made it through the mall
And found myself rejected
By the others who
Were shopping, too
And paid that fool...
