So I cooked the plastic pad thing under a roast on Sunday by accident. Problem?
I know I must seem like a total idiot. We rarely eat beef, but I've been sick for a week, and haven't cooked at all. It looked like the simplest solution on my first trip to the store in a week.

The first hint something was strange was that although it had been in the oven an hour and a half, it wasn't brown and sizzly. And there wasn't much of that great roasting smell, compared to normal. (sorry Veggies.)

So I fed my family baked plastic. I read the FDA factsheet and it said there was no imminent threat from baking the pad thing, but not to eat any of the food if the pad had melted. Come to find out after the fact, it had, I just didn't notice.

Any insights out there? I have to go to work, been out sick for way too long. Will read responses if any on return. Thanks, DU!

2. I am sorry to say this but,
I totally don't get how you could have done such a thing! Didn't you rinse the roast off before you seasoned it? The pad thing should have peeled away. Oh, well. I am sure you will be fine. Now you know. Take care and be well. xxx madaboutharry.

Tip for next time: roasting beef with a mustard rub is very delicious.

I can just picture myself tucking into a delicious-looking roast on Opihi's lanai someday, biting into it -- then going "Eeeewwwwwwww mustard!!" :puke:

My gut says that if you ingested plastic, that is bad. Let us know how you all do over the next few days. My fingers are crossed.

5. Reminds me of the time I tried to take the temperature of my mom's brisket..
with an old style mercury thermometer.

Turns out the temperature of steam is more than an oral thermometer can take. It popped and threw mercury everywhere. It's probably a good thing I confessed, we ate PB&J that night.

6. Heat will break plastic down
into some of its components. Ingest enough of it over time and you raise your risk of developing all sorts of cancers.

This one time probably won't poison your family, but geez Louise, rinse your damn meat off and season it before you throw it into an oven!

through your system intact--my dogs have eaten their weight in plastic, comes right out the other end. Now, the fact that it's melted does make it a little more worrisome, chemical-wise, but chances are that you'd have to eat a whole lot of meat that was in direct contact with the plastic to get sick from it--a couple thin slices of meat with just an edge of contact probably isn't going to do much to you. Call your doctor if you're scared or anyone develops upset stomach or any unusual symptoms. And like everyone else, I'm baffled by your cooking habits--no oil, no seasoning, no searing, no turning the damn thing over? Geez, where's the flavor?

13. It Depends Upon What Plastic It Is
If it's just simple polyethylene, (or polypropylene) the off gasses will mostly be CO and CO2 both of which would have vented when you opened the oven door. You might get a taste of the plasticizers, but those breakdown products shouldn't be bad for you.

PET is about the same as above.

If it's a polysulfone, you're safe, since those wouldn't break down at oven temperatures.

If it's PVC, i wouldn't eat the food. There could be small amounts of phosgene and chlorine gas emitted and those would react with carbs, proteins, and fats in the food. It could even radicalize some of the termini on those molecules.

14. I don't know if you should eat it or not. But I feel for you.
I recently slow cooked a roast and stupidly poured beer over it and shattered the pyrex dish it was in. I was just sick to have to throw away that big piece of meat.

16. I ate part of a bologna sandwich with the cardboard thingy from the
package in the sandwich. Got about three bites before investigating why the sandwich was so tough and chewey.

20. I roasted a chicken once
and found out afterward that inside was a plastic pouch filled with the neck and heart and stuff.

You did bad, but at least you didn't stuff it with plastic. :)

I took out the neck, but didn't know about the other end. Yipes!
