I was told by the woman who invested my retirement savings
'it would probably be best if you tried not to live into your 90s...'(regarding the Vanguard fund loss in my portfolio which I refuse to look at)
so , with that in mind, I suppose I should try to indulge in substances that will take a few years off.
yes, we really have reached that point I guess. I need to find some spiritual humour in this.

6. She is making the amateur mistake...
...of extrapolating the current market situation/returns into the distant future. (This assumes you aren't already 80.)

You need to find a new advisor.

23. Actually, it would be looking at current losses, and projecting
future income and gains.

Unless there is a HUGE new bubble that pumps up what's left of my 401k, it will take 4 years just to get back to where it was a year ago. IF the market stabilizes today. Essentially, ten years of earnings, disappeared. By the time I retire, I will have enough to last me maybe ten years - way short of MY 90s. Fortunately, based on family history, I don't expect to see 75.

15. Oh we can live long we just may have to adjust our standards.
I'll be in the Coleman tent at the State Park. Bring your sleeping bag, there will be room. My husband gets crazy when he hears me talk about the tent of our retirement but it helps me put the worry out of this horrible situation. Don't let her get you down. We're all in this together. Peace, Kim

16. you "have" 32 years before you hit 90
so unless this woman has been to the future no one on this planet has any idea what the future will be.

after having a heart attack several years ago,i figure if i live the best i can each day tomorrow will take care of itself

17. While she might have phrased it better, she did tell you the truth.
Most of us will be severely contracting our retirement expectations as time goes on.

We should all indulge in those things that give us joy. Remember the old saying, "It's not the years in your life that matter, but the life in your years." None of us know how long we have to enjoy this earthly paradise/vale of tears, so we should make the most of each moment.

The Buddhists have it right IMO: attachment is the cause of all suffering. Detach yourself, especially from the identification with memories and the investment in expectations. Concentrate all your attention on the moment you are living in, right NOW. Practice meditation or prayer as you see fit. Live fully, love deeply, laugh often. If you do this, you can be a pauper and still have abundance in your life.

Now is the time.

Time to wake up;
Time to understand what is happening;
Time to understand why it happened;
Time to accept the change;
Time to accept that we caused it;
Time to forgive ourselves;
Time to make peace with our personal gods;
Time to reach out;
Time to reach in;
Time to re-connect;
Time to begin the healing;
Time to remember that every ending contains the seed of a new beginning.

Now is the time.

18. Cool...start smoking pot. That'll take off a few years of life.
Of course, one drawback is it takes off a few years of maturity, but hey you aren't growing old anyways so that shouldn't matter.

19. Pot won't take years off your life
Or decrease your maturity.

Moderate use of a plant that decreases stress and anxiety, is non-toxic, and helps fight cancer and many other illnesses will probably not kill you.

24. My retirement advisor told me ...
... that I should look into switching some of my investment to some that are paying 8.5%.

Startled, I asked her "which ones are those?"

She wouldn't answer, but wanted to set up an appointment to talk it over.

I declined.

BTW, this is a well-regarded company that, in the past, had done very well by me.

33. Paging Dr. Kevorkian! Paging Dr. Kevorkian!
Wall Street needs you. Mass-producing your kits will save America's manufacturing base. We're going to need them to handle all the "financial advisors" and "experts" who got America into this mess. Their ringleaders deserve the electric chair -- certainly not you, Mari333.

Or, some other product you don't need that would bring her a nice, juicy commission.
