Edited on Wed Mar-04-09 08:05 PM by monmouth
Don't know if this is true or not, but this is quite the discussion you know where. www.freerepublic.com I don't know how to post to the exact thread but it's on the second page.

FR to be shut down by the Secret Service

Nearly all of the posts they quote on the KOS board were opinions, not threats. A few might be construed as threats, but they are the off hand remark type that was so common about Bush during his administration.

If someone posts death threats on telephone poles.....

.....Do they cut down the telephone poles?

.....NO! They take down the signs and maybe keep an eye out for who hung them.

It seems like shutting down FR would be like cutting down the telephone poles. If they take down this telephone pole, they should take down DU and KOS and ........

Just read that idiotic thread. Considering the comments made on Koz 7 the DUmp, not to mention Randi Rhodes saying the Cheney should take Bush out on the lake like Michael did with Fredo in the Godfather and (popping sound).

That's kosher.

The comments after Pres Bush flew to Baghdad? Those are kosher.

Call Obama a danger to this country somehow, according to these numpties are akin to threatening him?

Not one of the comments they quoted, indicated ANY threat of violence. But these Stalinists will use any means at their disposal to stifle dissent of any kind. I am truly for my country.

I'm not sure what's there to clarify. We used to irrationally fear that Bush was going to shut down our sites, that he was about to silence us, or declare martial law and end elections, etc. When there's an opposition President, and when he acts forcefully and quickly, it is natural for opposing partisans to feel implacable dread, like their world is coming to an end. Sometimes people voice that dread in reasonable ways (Bush is going to throw this nation into a New Depression, and we'll be regretting him for decades), and sometimes people voice that dread in unrealistic ways (Bush is a fascist and he is going to shut us down).

Obama has launched one of the fastest, farthest-reaching progressive movements in history, from his stimulus bill to his budget. In a way the world of the freepers is ending, much as ours came to an end when Bush started fucking with the Constitution. It's natural for them to react both reasonably (Obama is going to expand government and bring socialist policies to America) and unreasonably (Obama is a Communist and he is going to shut us down).

19. I never had that fear
There were rumblings about "shutting sites down", but I never paid attention to them.

I'm not even sure they knew HOW to shut sites down, with the many ways of getting around 'net censorship, especially in the early 2000's.

And I'm even LESS convinced that "lefties" are running the show now.

54. Oh, they know.
An October 2001 memorandum (PDF) by Yoo and special counsel Robert Delahunty, for instance, says that "the president has the legal and constitutional authority to use military force within the United States to respond to and combat future acts of terrorism, and that the Posse Comitatus Act does not bar deployment."

It also envisions the possibility of censorship restrictions that could be slapped on newspapers and the Internet, saying "First Amendment speech and press rights may also be subordinated to the overriding need to wage war successfully."

Everyone likes to take on the martyr role every now and again. Helps us feel validated in the face of overwhelming unpopularity, I suppose.

I thought high school was the last I'd ever see of that "I'm-so-wounded, no one likes me, I'll hang on a cross" garbage, but no-- it simply gets more and more dramatized the older I get...

It's a great way to get attention from others and have people look at us, but I'll be damned if it doesn't get really old really fast.

Sounds like he wants it to happen.

Actually, the morons don't get it. No one here wanted to assassinate Bush...we want him to stand trial for his war crimes. No one wanted to martyr him...that would be counter-productive.

If certain FR-types are threatening the life of Obama, then they need to be locked up.

48. Is that a change in policy about links to FR?
Free Republic used to be covered under this part of the rules:

"Members are permitted to link to highly partisan conservative websites, provided that they are doing so in the proper context."

I can see that if Free Republic is going to start being an "assassinate Obama" site, the admin attitude to it might change, but if so, I think an official announcement is needed. We've been linking to FR all through the history of DU.
