Barbara Bush recovering from heart surgery

Barbara Bush recovering after heart surgery
Published: 3/5/09, 5:25 AM EDT
HOUSTON (AP) - Former first lady Barbara Bush was recovering Thursday following 2 1/2-hour heart surgery to replace her aortic valve, hospital officials said.

Family spokesman Jim McGrath said Bush was already up and talking Wednesday night in intensive care only hours after undergoing the procedure at The Methodist Hospital.

Former President George H.W. Bush was at the hospital with his wife, McGrath said. The hospital said the former first lady was expected to be released in seven to 10 days.

"I am very impressed with and grateful to the wonderful team of doctors and nurses at The Methodist Hospital who have helped Barbara," the former president said. "We have every confidence she is in the best hands."

1. And today I am going to learn if I need it
I expect that the answer is no, but "we" will have to watch the condition in the future.

3. She's fortunate that she has insurance, and enough money to get the treatment she needs.
If she were a typical American, chances are she would not have been able to have this life saving surgery.

4. When they knocked her out, they made her recite this, instead of
counting backward from 100.
