Carl Sagan was one of the most influential writers I read in my childhood. Cosmos, The Dragons of Eden, Comet, later The Demon Haunted World; all of these works of his molded the way I perceived the universe in which I am immersed.

Speaking recently to a new, friendly, pro-Bush acquaintance of mine, I mentioned Sagan (critically, in fact), to which he replied, "Sagan's an idiot!" I cringed inwardly, smiled and let it pass (he really is a nice fellow), and pitied him the lack of wonder and humility provided me by Sagan.

I am who I am intellectually because of Carl Sagan. I miss you, Carl.
