RIAA is trying to KILL INTERNET RADIO
I just heard this, wasn't aware of it...The bastards at the RIAA intend to completely kill off independent internet radio by changing the royalty structure to a per-listener/per-use basis, as opposed to a percentage of donations currently employed. This will effectively kill off all internet radio except those stations already controlled by deep-pocketed corporations.

Easy links here...write your congressman!

1. And I believe the fees are retroactive to Jan. 2006
Some folks will suddenly find themselves owing thousands of dollars that they couldn't even prepare for.

2. Better yet, find out which congressmen are taking money from the recording industry
and contact them specifically. I don't think many here will like the names on that list.

8. actually, quite a few Democrats
In 2006, RIAA's PAC gave around 58% to repubs and 42% to Democrats. I would expect that percentage to shift now that Democrats control congress. Among the Democrats receiving RIAA $$:

Clinton and Obama in the Senate
Berman, Waxman, Conyers, Markey in the House

(Many more..those are just some of the bigger names).

This totally blows! If you have the time, give it a k&r. Otherwise we'll be looking at Clear Channel everything eventually.

4. This issue seldom gets much play here,
Sure, B. Clinton gets skewered over the DMCA, but he's very much past tense. The effects of that legislation and all the money dumped on the Democrats in reciprocation never gets much attention.
I guess seeing Sensenbrenner and Conyers agreeing on something makes some feel "all warm and fuzzy".

7. Small stations could see royalty payments top $1,000,000
Generally about $20,000 or so now. This would, obviously, simply kill all internet radio except the corporate-backed stations. Too, too bad so few seem to care.

9. What is the RIAA's problem? Don't they get that if they stopped charging 17.99
for a CD people might actually buy them? They are so cheap to make, that charging 5.99 or even 7.99 they would already making a bundle. I haven't bought a CD in years (unless its direct from the artist).

First Napster, now internet radio. Is nothing sacred to these fucks or is it just profit their sole motive?

14. Damn it! All music should be free! No artists should ever get paid
I want all my music for free. I can't believe people who work in the music business have the nerve to want to charge money for the work they do.

In case you need this - :sarcasm:

15. What a bunch of bullshit.
Do you even understand what the post was about?

No one is asking for anything FREE. Internet radio stations are still required to pay royalties for the music they play. What is new here is the amount. The Copyright Board wants to treat internet radio -- which has a fraction of the listeners -- the same as corporate radio. Go to Radio Paradise's web site. The "radio station" is essentially a laptop playing music. Sure, it's a business. But is it Clear Channel? It isn't advertising supported. What the copyright board is proposing is to essentially force all radio stations to solicit advertising in order to pay their dues. There'd be no other way to survive. A little more research into who is behind all this would probably be pretty enlightening.

But a :sarcasm: icon is always easier than research.

16. Here's some info and links on RIAA stuff.
First a description. I got this off a website that is no longer. But Google has a cash. Riaaradar.

http://72.14.253.104/search?q=cache:fIO_WlI-aSMJ:www.riaaradar.com/+riaa&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=11&gl=us

Just as people can currently find out where some products come from and who made them (Is this banana organic? Does this milk contain growth hormones? Were these clothes made in a sweatshop?), it is important to have that knowledge for as many consumer goods as possible. Knowledge is power, and knowing where the product came from can (and should) influence what you buy.

The RIAA is a group of several hundred record labels. The roster of members changes constantly (major labels create new subsidiary labels, popular artists are given their own labels, artists or labels leave the RIAA due to creative or political differences, etc.) and it is almost impossible to keep track. Aside from memorizing the entire list, or having the list available and checking it while shopping, it is hard to know who is a member and who is not.

A quick look at the following site will tell you whose side they're on.

18. We're right in the middle of it
A few know here that I own and operate an internet station, and we're watching this very, very closely. If the new royalty rates come to pass it's going to be very hard to stay on the air; the rates are way out of our reach.

We need some good vibes and getting on Congress' ass on this, folks.
